   このアルバムでザ・バンドはつまずいた。1971年リリースのこの微妙な失敗作は、誰もが認める名作2枚（『Music From Big Pink』、『The Band』）と危なっかしいが聴き応えのある『Stage Fright』に続くアルバムだったため、大きな期待をかけられていた。けれども、すばらしい瞬間（「Life Is a Carnival」と、デビュー作以来となるボブ・ディランのカバー曲「When I Paint My Masterpiece」）もあるにはあるが、メイン・ソングライターのロビー・ロバートソンの書くトラックはいま一歩の曲ばかりだ。

 「Last Of The Blacksmiths」「Where Do We Go from Here」「River Hymn」は、最初の2作を特徴づけていた素朴な郷愁の念を取り戻そうとして、いじり過ぎている。また「Smoke Signal」「Volcano」などの曲はいつのまにか忘れてしまいそうだ。だが、リチャード・マニュアルとヴァン・モリソンの騒々しいデュエット「4 per cent Pantomime」と一風変わった「Moon Struck One」のおかげもあり、ザ・バンドの曲を深く聴きこもうとするファンにとっては興味深いアルバムになっている。（Steven Stolder, Amazon.co.uk）

Here's where the Band stumbled. This 1971 lapse followed two consensus classics (Music From Big Pink and The Band) and the dicier but still worthy Stage Fright. Consequently, expectations were high. But, despite moments of excellence ("Life Is a Carnival", "When I Paint My Masterpiece", their first Dylan cover since their debut), primary songwriter Robbie Robertson repeatedly comes up short. "Last Of The Blacksmiths", "Where Do We Go from Here" and "River Hymn" are overwrought attempts to recapture the unaffected longing for the past that marked the first two albums, while the likes of "Smoke Signal" and "Volcano" are merely forgettable. Still, Van Morrison's rambunctious duet with Richard Manual on "4 per cent Pantomime" and the weird "Moon Struck One" help make Cahoots a worthwhile curio for those interested in digging deep into the Band songbook. --Steven Stolder

　このアルバムについては、デビュー作と２作目との比較でずいぶんと酷評されているようで、評価は低い。
　しかし、なんともいえない、独特の「雰囲気」は感じ取れるし、ぼんやり聞くにはいいアルバムだと思うけど、ほめすぎでしょうか？

The Bandのスタジオ盤としてはIslandsと並んで不人気な１枚。
でも個人的には本作前後の「Stage Fright」「Moondog Matinee」よりも聞き応えがあって結構良く聴く。
なんと言ってもVan MorrisonとR.Robertsonとの共作曲『4%Pantomime』や、Dylanの『When I Paint My Masterpiece』、それと明らかに今までとの趣向とは違う『Shoot Out in Chinatown』はかなり良い楽曲だと思う。後半はやや単調だとは思うけども。
The Bandといえば米国南部臭が強烈ながらも、ポップで分かり易いメロディが特徴。本作は全体的に粘りが無く「さらり」としていて、それは「Islands」でもそう。
でも何れも（特に本作）は聞易くてなかなかの良作。

７１年発表の４作目。ザ・バンドの熱望によりアラン・トゥーサンによるホーンが参加したアルバム。ほとんどの曲が、ロビー・ロパートソンの単独の曲となり、そのためなのか曲も演奏もやや中庸な印象を受ける。要するに地味な作品であり、決して代表作とは言えないのだけれど、前記のようにホーンが加わっているという特徴のある作品なので、サウンド的には楽しめる作品だと思う。ファンキーな１．がとにかく新鮮だが、前々作までにあったコクのようなものが少し薄まったかのような印象を受ける。アコーディオンが印象的なディラン作の２．はケイジャン風と言うのだろうか？タイトル通りのさすがはディランと思わせる良い曲だが、反面ディランらしくない曲である。寒々しい雰囲気に５．の後のコミカルな６．の楽し気な演奏への展開が個人的には結構好きである。１０．はホーンを全面に出したアルバムのハイライトの一つで、聞いているとワクワクしてくる。この曲があるとないではこのアルバムの印象は大きく変わったことだろう。ある種の低迷期の入り口となった時期の作品のためやや面白みには欠けるが、全体的にはじわじわと効いてくる佳曲の詰まったアルパムだと思う。でもやっぱりザ・バンドとしては「絶対お薦め！！」とは言いがたい作品ではありますな。
