6th。頭２曲がギターを割と前面に出している曲で、前作からの流れに逆行しているのが意外。でも#3の「Amity」は淡々としたドラムとシンセにannekeが思い詰めたように歌う曲で、こういう鬱な曲を聴くとホッとしますね・・・（汗）。#8の「Herbal movement」もシンセと打ち込みによる暗黒アンビエントな曲で癒されます。#4は静かなギターにannekeが呟くように歌っているのが印象的で、後半は力強く歌い出します。全体的に前作よりギターサウンドの割合が多めで、楽曲もゴシックというカテゴリーに収まりきらないオールジャンルな音楽性になってきている。あとAnnekeが更に変幻自在に歌っていて凄いです。改めてannekeの歌唱力に心酔するとともに、annekeが居てくれさえすればこのバンドは安泰だなー、、と思ったり・・・・。ゴシックの枠から出かかっているが、これからも沈鬱な雰囲気は大事にしてもらいたい。

オランダを代表するゴシックメタルバンド「The Gathering」が2000年にリリースしたフルレンス6枚目。表看板であるアネク嬢がグループ加入後、4作目になります。

前作「HOW TO MEASURE A PLANET？」で脱メタル化を図り、浮遊感あふれる独自路線を進み始めた彼ら。最初の2曲は割とギターを前面に押し出したアップテンポな曲で「あれ？ゴシック路線へ回帰か？」と思わせますが、#3「Anemy」からはシンセとドラムの打ち込みによるシンプルな曲調の中でアネク嬢が切々と歌い上げ、前作から志向しはじめた路線へと戻ります。もはや「ゴシックメタル」と呼ぶには憚れるほど、全体を覆うけだるくアンニュイな雰囲気に身を任せていると、合法的なトリップ感を味わうことができます。ゲストミュージシャンによるフレンチホルンやストリングスによる上品なアレンジも、いっそう幻想的な世界に深みをもたらしています。

３作目、４作目あたりで彼らのファンになった人にとっては、いささか退屈に感じられるかもしれませんが、天才的とも思えるアネク嬢による変幻自在のボーカルは、理屈を超越した魅力を放っています。ジャケットデザインもいままでで一番良いですね。

オランダの女性Voゴシックメタルバンド、ザ・ギャザリングの6th。2000作
アネク嬢加入後4作目の本作は、前作「HOW TO MESURE A PLANET」からのメタル要素の減退と、浮遊感のあるしっとり要素を進めつつあるアルバム。
曲によってはまだメタルリフも出てくるので、ゴシックメタルとしての存在感を示しつつよりアンニュイな表現力を身に付けたアネク嬢のたゆたうような歌唱がふわりと心地よい。
元気のいいゴシックメタルを好む方には眠くてたまらぬサウンドだろうが、倦怠の美と低血圧的なゴシックロックとしては非常に気持ち良い音だ。
メロトロン的な音色のキーボードも良い雰囲気をかもしだしている。
