当時高校生だった私は友達と授業をさぼり、
このアルバムの収録された大阪フェスティバルホールに高揚した精神で臨んだ。

むろん、「On the Corner」「In concert」「Get up with it」といったこのコンサート直前の
数年間のアルバムも擦りきれるほど聴いての出陣だ。

幕が開く前に、マイルスの弾くオルガンの不協和音が強烈に会場に響く。
そこで聞こえてきたサウンドは、上記のアルバムとはまったく違う音楽だった！
Miles、凄い！と叫んだ記憶がある。

このバンドの構成の重要な部分を担っているのは、
マイルスが「あいつはマスターだ、俺が教えることはなにもない」といった、
ジミ・ヘンドリックスの”師匠”である、ピート・コージーだ。
６弦と１２弦のギター＋シンセサイザー、パーカッションを操り、
マイルスのアドリブの後を０．３秒遅れくらいで同じフレーズで追っかけてみせる
ピートはやはり凄い。

この日の夜の演奏を納めたパンゲアも同様に素晴らしいが、
どっちかというとこのアガルタの方が、個人的には好きだ。

老いた、くだらぬ評論家どもが難癖をつけていたマイルスのサウンドに
若い感性は、それらをせせら笑いながら、ぐいぐい引き込まれていた。

アイビールックで極めた大人のジャズファンが驚きの目で見る中で、長髪をなびかせて
颯爽と席に着いた思い出も懐かしい。

横尾忠則のジャケット（日本版のみ）もイカしている素晴らしいアルバム。

ＬＰで何度も聴いてボロボロになったため、廉価再発売になった際に買い換えて聴き続け、最初にＣＤ化された時に、やれ嬉しやと飛びついてみれば、音質が悪くてガッカリした。
2,000円の廉価版ＬＰより迫力の無い音だった！
今回のＣＤは違う！音質が断然良い！！
これこそ、かつて熱中して聴いた音だと思った。
体調が最高の時に「アガルタ」「パンゲア」ぶっ続けで聴きたい。

「アガルタ」「パンゲア」は何度かリマスターされて発売されていますが、やはり最新の物は音質が格段に向上しています。1990年にリリースされた最初のCDと聴き較べてみるとその違いに愕然とします。古いCDではどんなに音量を上げてもこもってて聞こえずらかった低音と高音が、最新リマスターではクリアーかつバランスが最良になっており、まったく別の作品と言っても過言ではありません。安いからといって輸入盤の分厚いジュエルケース盤を買うと大きな損をします。「アガルタ」はジャケット違いなのでついつい欲しくなりますが、買うならこの最新リマスター盤です！
