ボズ・スキャッグスは当時、本当に‘格好の良い’サウンドでした。ＡＯＲと言えばそれまでですが、彼がメジャーになった頃、日本ではニューミュージックという言葉が使われ始めた時期で、人々は彼の新しいサウンドに最先端の音楽を見つけたのかもしれません。当時私も彼の音楽に飛びつきました。「We're all alone」「Slow dancer」「燃えつきて」･･･、とりわけ彼の歌うバラードは本当に斬新なサウンドであり、日本の流行歌がダサイような気持ちにさえなったものです。
このベスト集は彼の代表曲、特にバラードを集めたものであり、バラード好きな日本人向けに発売された日本だけの企画もの。確かに本来のボズは、「Silk Degrees」「Middle Man」に代表されるソウルが本来の持ち味であり決してそれを否定しませんが、未だこうしたバラードサウンドを求める日本人は数多いはず。このベスト集は、さまざまなアルバムから人気の高いバラードを選曲していて、私は素直にいいアルバムだと思います。また解説書に各曲の詳しい経緯が書かれているのも、これから彼の音楽を聴こうとする人たちには有難いものでしょう。

ところで、最近リタ・クーリッジ版「We're all alone」が映画の宣伝でＴＶに登場していますが、当時こちらの邦題が何と「みんな一人ぼっち」、これはどう考えても変ですよね。

1970年代後半、「A.O.R.（Adult Oriented Rock）」という音楽ジャンルが大変人気を博した時期でした。そのサウンドは、都会的で洗練されたポップ感を持つ、いわゆる『大人向けのお洒落なロック』 とでもいえるものでした。

A.O.R.は日本でもファッション的に大ブームになり、デートやドライブのBGMには必須アイテムとなりました。そのA.O.R.の代表的な歌手といえばボズ・スキャッグスですね。
この『ボズ・ザ・バラード』に収録されている「WE’RE　ALL　ALONE」「SLOW　DANCER」「YOU　CAN　HAVE　ME　ANYTIME（邦題　トワイライト・ハイウェイ）」「HARBOR　LIGHTS」は大変有名で、都会的なロック・バラードが多く、ロックにおシャレを持ちこんだ男と言われています。ＴＯＴＯの演奏も今聴いてもなかなか素晴らしいですね。

リーフレットに７頁の解説を書かれた上芝とおる氏の文章は参考になりました。全米でのアルバム・チャートの最高位や各曲個別の解説が詳しいのは嬉しい限りです。

３０年近く前の演奏が多いですが、全く古さを感じさせないのは原曲の完成度の高さとボズの不変的な魅力のお蔭でしょう。

休日の昼下がり、彼のスローなバラードを聴いていると穏やかな気分が広がります。

とにもかくにもAORの王道、ボズのバラード集です。もうこれぞAORどうだ！と言わんばかりの名曲ぞろいに涙がチョチョ切れます。ひとりで部屋で聞くもよし、夜のドライブのお供にするもよし。カップルの方たちなら、今日決めるぞ！の時にもおすすめの一品。ボズの声からにじみ出る男の色気を満喫なさってください。
