スライ＆ロビーもそうだけど、譜面なんか読めない＝つまり耳と集中力だけで演奏する。予習も復習もしてないっつうことか。よくお勉強してる日本のFUSIONバンドのギタリストは完全に負けている。音楽学校に通って必死にギター勉強してる君もこんなふうには絶対に演奏できない。そうだからジェフというのは、まじ自然体なのさ。演奏したいから演奏する、売れるかどうかなんて考えて演奏しない＝だからはずしたアルバムも存在する。正直だ。自分の心に響く音のみを選択して演奏する、これだけは言える。つまりジェフの音楽はソウルミュージックなのだ。サムクックの歌が我々の心を打つのと同じようにジェフのギターも我々の魂に触れる。ジェフがなになに風のスタイルの曲を演奏していようと俺にはまったく関係!!い。大事なのはジェフが心にストレートに響く音を演奏しているかどうかなだけ。このアルバムはそれが存在する。だから名作なのだ。彼の感性は非常に感度がいい、繊細なのだ。だからこちらも繊細に聞こうではないか。だからこれはJEFF BECK MUSICという名前の音楽だ。一音一音は彼の日常生活の呼吸そのものなのだから。ジェフは自動車いじりが大好きです。だからみんなもべックにのりなさい。

前作「ギターショップ」以来10年程経って発表された作品です。本作では同時代の音楽の潮流にのったような幅広いタイプの曲が聴けます。ですが彼が無理して同時代の音楽に迎合してる様には決して聴こえません。テクノなディスコロックの1,2,ブルースライヴの3、中東風のリフが印象的な4、アンビエント6、へヴィメタ9、ケルト音楽の叙情的な10など聴き所盛り沢山です。ボウイの作品の様に、我が道を突き進みながらも新しい表現を持ち前の鋭い感性とギターで自然に開拓するベックがここにいます。ギターは上手くて当たり前。それ以上に本作で光るのがロックというジャンルを超える恐るべき感性でしょう。彼のそんな鋭敏でアーティスティックな感覚が堪能できる本作はある意味前衛的です。
