大福と苺のように思わぬ組み合わせが功を奏す場合が、Jazzにはある。Lee KonitzとElvin Jonesの共演は発売当時は驚きだったろうが、元々相手の音をよく聞くタイプのプレイヤーなので杞憂に終わった。メロディメイカーというより対位的な旋律を螺旋的に積み重ねていくKonitzはどうしても指向が内側に向かいがちなため、むしろ一見煽り立てるElvinのバッキングは的を得たものとなったと思う。You'd be so Nice to Come Home toが白眉で、うねりを上げるKonitzの迫力と弾力には彼の底力を改めて実感させられる。

コニッツの最高傑作といえば、サブコンシャス・リーというのが定番である。僕もその通りだと思うし、当時のコニッツは神がかっていた。では、その後のコニッツは燃え尽きた余燼であるかというとそれは否定しなければならない。なぜなら６０年のモーションという異色作にして最高のパフォーマンスを聞かせる作品があるからだ。これが異色なのはエルビン・ジョーンズという新世代の複合リズムを叩き出す天才ドラマーとの共演ゆえである。しかしエルビンは単なる豪放なだけのドラマーではない。以前生を聴いたときに感じたのは、あれほど激しくパワーあふれる演奏が全くうるさくなく、繊細で美しくさえあったことだ。コルトレーンの最高のパートナーであったエルビンだが、ロリンズ、ゲッツ、ショーター、ジョー・ヘンダーソンといった当代きってのホーン奏者のバッキングを勤め、数多くの傑作をものにしている。モーションもそうした歴史的名作であり、異色の組み合わせが化学変化を生んだといえよう。
