飛ばして聞きたくなるような曲は一曲もありません。全曲が秀作です。
1９77年発表のアルバムですが、今聴いても違和感がなく、
一曲目「Boats Against the Current」の美しさから
もう感動してしまいます。

ERIC CARMENのソロ２作目。
現在まで、６枚のアルバムを出してますが、私としては、彼の最高傑作だと思ってます。
タイトル曲の１曲目"BOATS AGAINST THE CURRENT"から最後の"RUN AWAY"まで捨て曲が１曲も無い。
特に１曲目は最高にいかしたバラードです。４曲目の"TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT"のサウンドは、ERICが在籍していたTHE RASPBERRIESを思い出させます。５曲目の"LOVE IS ALL THAT MATTERS"は、１曲目と似たタイプの曲で、とてもメロディアスです。
６曲目の"SHE DID IT"は、シングルカットされた曲で、スマッシュヒットを記録したカッコいい曲です。
最後の"RUN AWAY"は８分にも及ぶ大曲ですが、出だしのピアノソロが美しく、メロディアスで最高の曲です。
しかしこのERIC CARMENは、PAUL McCARTNEYに優るとも劣らないコンポーザーですね。

　"Boats Against the Current"。冒頭のこの作品は決して大袈裟な印象を与えることなく、壮大さのなかに内面的情感を繊細に表現することに成功している。この曲に代表される、あくまでも個人的な内面性は、その性質ゆえ一般的評価を拒絶しており、またそれゆえに純粋な輝きを放っているのかもしれない。
　うってかわって"She did it"は一聴するとビーチボーイズ・ライクなコーラスに包まれた作品で，なるほどB・ジョンストンが加入しているというのもうなずける。しかし、まさに換骨奪胎、夢の中で鳴り響くような完璧なハーモニーでエリック・カルメンは恋の甘美さを歌い上げる。

　商業主義に毒される以前の「よき７０年代性」を有したこのマスターピースは、私にとって永遠の「個人的作品」なのである。
