Despite less than a year later and solely on the strength of their live shows, the Beach Boys garnered Band of the Year award in
Rolling Stone magazine, 1973's
In Concert is, unaccountably, rarely afforded much in the way of retrospective applause. This is probably due to the all-too-conspicuous absenteeism of madcap mentor/cult figurehead Brian Wilson at the time of the recording and, of course, because
Pet Sounds, not unduly, remains the media's first choice for critical column filler. But as live albums go, this is a bona-fide classic of the genre from a rock band (yes, that's right--take a listen to the rubber-burning joyride through "Fun Fun Fun" or the proto-Charlatans hammond-organ groove of "Sail on Sailor", or the gleeful folk-rock stomp through "Sloop John B") at the peak of their performing powers. The utterly matchless vocal serenity of Carl Wilson alone makes this the kind of disc that desert islands were invented for.
