   ブラックホークの実況盤を皮切りに、「イン・ヨーロッパ」「イン・トーキョー」「イン・ベルリン」と、60年代前半のマイルスは圧倒的にライヴ盤が多い。本作、そして同時に録音された「フォア＆モア」もまたしかりだ。マイルスのフリー・ブローイング時代という言葉に出会ったら、それはまさにこの時代のことを指す。それ以前のマイルスはスタジオ録音による緻密な演奏に特徴を見せたが、フリー・ブローイング時代は一転して、自由奔放に吹きまくるアグレッシブなプレイに魅力を発揮した。
   本作と「フォア＆モア」は、リンカーン・センターのフィルハーモニック・ホールにおける64年のコンサート・ライヴである。この2作は同じ時の演奏ながら、ビックリするほど対照的な内容だ。躍動感みなぎる「フォア＆モア」に対し、本作はしっとりと落ち着いたムード。スタンダード・バラードを中心にした選曲のためだ。フリー・ブローイング時代の演奏とはいえ、マイルスの絶妙なバラード演奏を堪能すべき作品。タイトル曲と<3>が泣ける演奏だ。（市川正二）

60年代前半のフリー・ブローイング時代は、ハービー・ハンコック、ロン・カーター、トニー・ウイリアムスというすばらしいリズム・セクションに恵まれ、思いっきりライブでトランペッターとしての実力を発揮できた。おそらく楽器奏者としてのマイルスにとって、この時代が絶頂期だといえるのではないだろうか。そんな中でマイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン、ステラ・バイ・スターライト、アイ・ソート・アバウト・ユーといったスタンダード・スロー・バラードがまとめられたこのアルバムは50年代の静的リリシズムとは一味違ったセンチメンタリズムの総決算のような演奏である。65年を最後にスタンダードから離別したマイルスにとってこの演奏は甘く、切なく、美しいジャズへの最後の別れを惜しむかのごとく入れ込んでいる。個人的にはステラ・バイ・スターライトが最も愛着の持てるトラックだ。ジョージ・コールマンのソロやハンコックのドライブ感あふれるピアノもすばらしいが、やはりマイルスの後半のテーマ解釈は美のレッドゾーンの極致の領域に踏み込んだ事を自覚して、自らそこから身を引いたのではないかと思わせるほど美しい。過剰なセンチメンタリズムが危険であることを知っていたマイルスは、この後ウエイン・ショーターとともにあらたなハード・ボイルドな神秘的モード・ジャズへと突き進むのだ。

Miles Davisの数あるCDの中でも最高の作品は、やっぱし1955~1965頃のクインテット演奏だと思います。この作品はライブですが、同じ日のライブのハードな曲を集めたCD[Four and More]に対してこちらはバラード系の曲が中心となっています。ハービーハンコック~ロンカーター~トニーウイリアムスのリズムセクションのすばらしいスイング感が、ゆったりとしたテンポの曲でも絶品の出来ですねー。とくにラストのI thought about youは、マイルスのラッパも、ジョージコールマンのテナーサックスも、リズムセクションもみんな最高の出来で、何度聞いても聞き飽きませんですねー。

マイルス･デイヴィスの数あるCDのなかでもよりクールなアルバム。静かで叙情的な演奏はこの時代のマイルスの真骨頂である。アルバムタイトル曲の「マイ･ファニー･ヴァレンタイン」は他のアルバムにも収められているが、ここで聴けるのはその内でもベストとなるのでは？うれしい時、悲しい時、その時の心情に応じて、その優しい音色が響きわたる。
