   本作は、64年9月にベルリンのフィルハモーニック・ホールでライブ録音された。メンバーはマイルス（トランペット）のほか、ウエイン・ショーター（テナーサックス）、ハービー・ハンコック（ピアノ）、ロン・カーター（ベース）、トニー・ウィリアムス（ドラムス）である。
   この時期のマイルスは割合積極的に演奏し、わき上がるアイディアをストレートに噴出させている。また、録音当時18歳だったトニー・ウィリアムスの、臨機応変で鮮やかなドラミングにも注目して聴きたい。周りの音のちょっとした雰囲気の変化にも反応し、あるときは手綱を緩め、また一転してムチを入れる。その判断の的確さは見事というほかない。ショーターは常に大きく構え、ハンコックは豊富な技の一部をチラっと見せるだけで音楽の流れる方向を変えてしまう。（松本泰樹）

1964年9月25日、ベルリン・ジャズ・フェスティバルの行われたベルリン・フィルハーモニック・ホールでライヴ録音。
何と言ってもこのアルバムを有名にしているのは、ウェイン・ショーターが初めて参加したアルバムであるということだろう。ウェイン・ショーターは1964年9月15日からマイルスのバンドに参加し、1970年2月17日にマイルスのバンドから離れている。彼の参加で所謂60年代のマイルス・クインテットは完成をみる。ウェインはこの時31才、ロン・カーターは27才、ハービー・ハンコックは24才、ドラムのトニー・ウイリアムスはなんと18才だった。
マイルスは常にメンバーに言い続けた。『常に新しい方法で表現しろ。』これをこなし続けられる面子しか彼のバンドには残れない。逆にそれが出来ると思われるヤツしか招集がかからない、とも言える。かくて最初の招集にもかかわらず集められた彼らは端々にそういうプレイを聴かせてくれる。
このアルバムでは特にハービー・ハンコックのピアノが素晴らしいと僕は思う。弾いているフレージングも切り方も小さな音であっても実に斬新だ。

怪物たちの誕生の瞬間を聴くようなアルバムである。

黄金のカルテットの幕開けとなるショーター初参加のライブ。マイルスのフリーブローイング時代は、サックスが転々としながら、良いアルバムを数多く出しているが、本作品の決め手は、まさしくショーター。モードやスタンダードの名曲で選曲されているため、他のライブアルバムとの演奏の違いが良くわかる。とにかく新鮮なのは、ショーターが、あまり饒舌に吹かないこと。意図的に頭を外したり、尻切れトンボとしたり・・・。これを後ろで煽る若きトニー・ウイリアムス。同じように捻ったアプローチを試みるハンコック。良い意味で緊張感にあふれたライブとなっています。
ＪＡＺＺをインプヴィゼーションの面白さで捕らえるのであれば、６０年代マイルスの最高傑作といっても過言ではない好きなアルバムです。

ジャズの醍醐味を存分に味あわせてくれる一枚。
ウェイン・ショーターの加入により後に「黄金のカルテット」と呼ばれる事になるメンバー達の初レコーディング。
お互いが呼応しあい、タイトにまとまっている。
いたずらに声を張り上げる事なく、熱を帯びた一音、一音の緊張感が聴く者を捉えて離さない。
幼稚な感情はひとかけらもなく、過去への甘い憧憬もすてさっている。
「何か」を探し続ける、求め続ける。

これがジャズというもの、そして音楽というものだと思う。
