グラミー賞受賞の前作『ハバナ』から早いもので3年が過ぎてしまった。しかし、この新作を聴けば待つだけのかいはあったと思われる。今回ロイ・ハーグローヴが聴かせてくれるのはウィズ・ストリングス・アルバムだ。それも正攻法のバラード集である。アレンジまで自身が手掛けるという力の入れようだ。まさにこれは音楽家としての持てる力を存分に発揮した力作と言っていい。それにしても彼は上手い。艶やかなホーンの響きといい、穏やかな表現といい、これはクリフォード・ブラウンが残した名作『ウィズ・ストリングス』に匹敵する内容だ。こうしたアルバムの常で、トランペッターには歌心や叙情性が要求される。それらを高いレベルでクリアした上に、極上のテクニックで美しいメロディを個性的なプレイに包んで表現してみせたのがここでのハーグローヴだ。30歳を目前に控えた男が、円熟味さえ感じさせる堂々たる作品を吹き込んだのである。 (小川隆夫) --- 2000年05月号

本家PMG版よりも遥かに素晴らしい「Always And Forever」。 海辺で風に吹かれているような気分になります。
