クリス・スクワイアやデビッド・クロスなどとの共演で一部マニア筋には知られている、Steve Toppingのソロデビューアルバムです。アラン・ホールズワースが絶賛した、いや絶賛していないとかで話題になっていますが、私が勝手に想像するには、アランさんが絶賛したというならば、それは「早弾きテクニック」ではなく、「異常なまでのオリジナリティー（言い換えれば、誰にも真似できない変態フレーズ）」だと思います。
楽曲自体も結構暴力的でハードなものが目立ちますが、特筆すべきは、予測不可能な捻じ曲がった変態フレーズが随所にあふれているという点。その変態性に関しては、他のギタリストに類似性を求めることは難しいかもしれません。でも、あえて探すとちょうどジョン・マクラフリンの「火の鳥」を初めて聞いたときの印象に似ています。そうです、音自体はそれほどでもないのに、グサグサと刺さってくるような印象が似ています。そんなことを考えていたら、ラストの「Ｌｉｆｅ　Ｄｉｖｉｎｅ」という曲はジョン・マクラフリンの曲のカバーでした。

しかし、このSteve Topping といい、ジョン・マクラフリンといい、アラン・ホールズワースといい、3人ともイギリス人。あまり物事を深く考えないアメリカでは、おそらくこんな人材は生まれてこないでしょうね。

他のレビュワーの方の評価があまりにも高評価
だったんで、買ってみました。
うーん、セカンドのジャケットに写っているギター
を見て嫌な予感がしていたのだが、だってシングルコイル
のＳＧなんて、リードを得意とするギタリストは
使わないから。
で、中身だが、はっきりいって下手です。
音使いも、最後の曲なんか、思いっきりペンタトニック
スケールで、それのどこが他のギタリストには、
思いもつかないんですか。
この人、下手したらジミー・ペイジより下手ですよ。
