ここのところずっとブルースを聴いているわけですが。正直、体力要ります。これならハード・ロックを聴いているほうが体力的に楽かな、と思うときがあります。ハウリン・ウルフのあとにジョン・リー・フッカー、エルモア・ジェイムスにハウンド・ドック・テイラー。サイコーです。ただ疲れてしまうのです。そんなとき、この人です。歴史的な意味合いとか、まだ勉強中でわからないこともありますが、癒されます、小粋です。バックの演奏はほぼジャズです。というか、この時代はジャズとブルースに線引きなんかなかったんでしょうね。朝から夜までどんな時間でもきけるステキなアルバムです。このアルバムで癒された後、最近の私はまたゴリゴリブルースに立ち向かっていくのでした。

テキサスの偉大なプレイヤー「モダン・ブルース・ギターの父」、Ｔボーンの長いキャリアと膨大な録音からレーベル（Imperial, Rumboogie, Capitol, Atlantic, Comet and Black & White）を越えてピックアップされたライノ社名物ベスト盤。一枚のディスクでは本編が一番充実したものだろうか。

ブルース／ジャズの名盤として名高いこの作品だけれど、個人的にはTボーンはワンショットで他のコンピレーション、アンソロジーもので聴く方がなぜかインパクトがある。それはステージ狭しと飛び跳ね、アピりまくる彼のショーでのスタイルが、チャーリー・クリスチャンを除くそれ以前の大衆音楽のギター弾きが、リズム楽器として後方に演じたそれとは一目瞭然で違うこと、またそのエレキ化した単音ソロによる縦横無尽なペンタトニックフレーズ（クリスチャンはあくまでもジャズの運指とスケールだ）の衝撃だ。ただギター界のイノベイター的存在の偉人Tボーンも、ことその作り出す音楽自体は、シーンでの過渡期に位置するためか、どこか彼以降のモダンブルース／ジャズギタリストの作る音楽性より若干堅く!た古い。いわゆる戦後ブルース／ジャズだ。これは彼の業績の大きさを考えれば相当辛いかもしれませんが、いちリスナーとしてはそう思います。歴史的価値は甚大で星１０個はあげたい、だが始めてこれを買った時、スローなテンポのブルースなどにその様な感慨をもったことは事実です。Tボーンを師と仰ぐBBキングが、より一般的成功を収めたのは、BBのギタースタイル自体よりも、BBの作る音楽がそうなのであって、ギタリストとしての偉大さ、特異さ、その天才的な側面はTボーンの方に大きく譲ります。（私はBBが今だによく楽しめない、解らない....たぶんこの辺が原因）だからこそTボーンはコアなプロ／アマ・ギタリストをとりこにし続けるのでしょうか。この作品に満足仕切れない人は、次にポマード頭とズートスーツ!サービスしまくる？彼の白黒映像のヴィデオを入手される事をお勧めします。そこでの雄姿に私の言いたい事の何たるか、即理解して頂けると思います。
