   レコード会社を移籍後、1981年に発表した、結果的に彼の最後のアルバムとなってしまった名作。前妻との離婚問題が響いたのか、大スターだというのに情けないことに低予算で製作されたアルバムだが、進歩したテクノロジーの助けを借りてほとんど1人で作り上げてしまったこの作品は、そのシンプルなテクノ的音色が後のブラコン的R&Bサウンドを偶然にも先取りするものとなった。独自のファンキーな味わいのある<1><3>、和やかな夏の夜を思わせる名曲<2>など、個人的には一番愛着を覚える作品。この後84年に彼は実の父親に射殺される。（麻路 稔）

古巣Motownから移籍後初のアルバムにて、彼の最期の作品となってしまったMidnight Love。
この作品の特徴としては、Marvin Gayeの経済的な理由によって、ミュージシャンを雇えなかったため、ほぼ一人でシンプルな打ち込みによる極めてチープなオケである。

が、それを補うかのごとく、Marvin GayeのVocalによるオーケストレーションが緻密なほどに組み合わさり、過去の作品と比べても全く見劣りがしない。
特に、"Midnight Lady"、"Rockin' After Midnight"なんかの多彩なコーラスワークは、それだけで圧倒させられるものがある。
そして、"Sexual Healing"。何故、こんなに簡素なオケなのに、とてつもなくきらぴやかで素敵なサウンドを出せるのだろう？
このアルバムを聴くと、Marvin Gayeの音楽のセンス、そしてVocalistとしての才能を改めて痛感せざるを得ない。

僕は、この作品の中でも"'Til Tomorrow"というバラードが大好き。一見前3曲と比べて地味なナンバーに聴こえるが、セクシーで、繊細な彼の声が心に染みてくる。Marvin Gayeという最高のVocalが聴ける1曲だと思う。

マービンゲイは単なる素晴らしい歌手ではない。彼は優れたソングライター、プレイヤー兼プロデューサーでもある。この稀代のマルチタレントがその全精力をかけて作ったのがこのMidnight Loveだ。聞き込めば聞き込むほどに味わいがでてくる。セクシャルヒーリングでの多重録音によるマービンのファルセット、テナー、ベースの三音のボーカルの絡みがお見事。本作で彼はキーボード、ドラムスもプレイしている。

全体的にシンプルな音作りであるのが、彼の力量の凄さを指し示す要因になっている。ジャズ・ロック・レゲエへまでクロスオーバーするサウンドは、多くのミュージシャンに影響を与え続けている。住み慣れたモータウンを離れ、彼自身のサウンドを表現する為にＣＢＳに移った。そこからの最初のアルバムが彼の遺作となった。じっくり何度でも聴いて欲しいアルバムだ

このアルバムを聴いていると、日常生活でどんどん降り積もってくる様々な「束縛」や「義務」といったクサリから、魂が解き放たれるような快感を覚えます。いろんなもので窮屈に縛られたひとの心を自由な空間へと解き放ってくれます。「どーせ生きていくならもっとキモチ良く生きちゃいましょうよ」みたいな無言のメッセージを感じてしまいます。イメージはやはり夜ですねえ夏の夜に聴くと味わいもひとしお。楽曲も非常に多彩でマーヴィンのソングライターとしての才能のすごさに驚かされます。捨て曲ナシの高品位ブラックコンテンポラリーアルバム。シングル・カットされマーヴィン久々のスマッシュ・ヒットとなった「セクシャル・ヒーリング」をはじめ、全編にマーヴィンのリラックスした伸びやかでセクシーであたたかな歌声がこだまします。個人的には「’til　Tomorrow」にシビれまくりです。大切なひととしっとりとキメたい夜にどうでしょうか？ラストを締め括る「My　love　is　waitin'」もまじサイコーで文句のつけようもありません。
