一時期のポップな路線から一気にまたメイデンらしい重さと勢いを取り戻したアルバム。一曲目のWickermanは演奏のどれをとっても言う所が無いが楽曲自身も素晴らしい！繊細さと重さが同居しているメイデンの中でも相当の傑作！

メイデンに最強のフロントマンと傑作を提供し続けていたグレイトなギタリストが帰ってきた第12作目。

前二作は元ウルフズベインのブレイズベイリーが歌っていたが、まあ正直メイデンには向いてなかったから解雇って感じだろうなあ。
ハリーはそれを否定してたけど、ロッドが首にしたっぽいね。
まあもったりした声質に、ださい格好、狭い声域と、明らかにメイデンに合っていなかった。
決して悪いVoではないけど、、って感じです。

ハリーも頑張ってブレイズに合わせていたが、ブルース以降のメイデンは広い声域を自由に使えた為、やりにくかったであろうことは曲を聴くと容易に想像できた。

しかし、今回は違う。
あのブルースが返ってきたのだから、ハリーの天才的な楽曲が生きないはずはない。

おそらくファンは、このアルバムを聴く前から『絶対傑作になる』と必然的に理解していたと思う。
それくらい凄いメンバーが終結したのだ。

思い出して欲しい。

かつてメイデンに駄作が存在したであろうか？

なんだかんだでブレイズ時代の楽曲もそこらのバンドなんかとでは天と地の差であった。

微妙に評判が良くない「NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING」も実際は名曲がずらりと並び、捨て曲等一切ない。

まあメイデンで捨て曲だと思うのはDRIFTERくらいなもんです。

他は多少インパクトが無くても、捨て曲ではなかった。

この時点で黄金期のメンバーが終結したメイデンが傑作を作らないわけはないと至極当然に期待してしまうのです。


実際出来上がったアルバムは、全メタルファンの期待を裏切らない傑作に仕上がったのです。

イギリスのロック雑誌のケラングには40ｐにものぼるメイデンの広告がのり、『もはやメイデンを越すことができるのはメイデンのみ』とロック史上最高の賛辞を得た程だ。
アメリカではソニーが社を上げてメイデンを売ったりと、凄い事が欧米では起きていたのです。

★曲は
一曲目は「ザ・ウィッカー・マン」
これはエイドリアンらしい典型的なブリティッシュメタルの曲。
悪くはないけど、このアルバムで一番パッとしない曲。
しかし、それはメイデンの中の話であって、聴き易いこの曲は一般受けしやすい良い曲です。
二曲目は「死界ヘの誘い」
美しいギターのアルペジオから始まり、次第にアグレッシヴになっていく。
航海の歌なので、潤いのある滑らかな曲展開に憂いを帯びたメイデンらしいメロディラインが素晴らしい。目を閉じると、海の恐ろしさや幻覚が見えるようなドラマティックな曲だ。
三曲目は「ブレイヴ・ニュー・ワールド」
タイトルは『素晴らしき新世界』だが、それはメイデンらしい皮肉で、人間によって破壊された未来を歌っている。
まさにジャケットの絵の世界である。
起承転結がはっきりした曲で、どこのメロディーを取っても見栄えするくらいの最高のメロディーを詰めたメイデンだから成しえたドラマティックな傑作である。
四曲目は「ブラッド・ブラザーズ」
これはハリーの父親が亡くなった事や戦争にインスパイアされて作った曲らしい。
ベースラインがくっきりと見える所もハリーらしく、聴き応えがある。
「Clansman」に似た感じの曲であるが、こちらはハリーの悲しみが見える厳格な雰囲気を含んだ曲だ。
途中のドラマティックなインストや美しいギターソロ、ブルースの優しい歌唱、リズムの起伏、次々変わる曲展開、全てが絶品。
五曲目は「ザ・マーシネリー」
一転メイデンの十八番である攻撃的なリフから始まる曲。ブルースの荒々しい歌唱も素晴らしい。
しかしコーラスは壮大でメロディアスである。
六曲目は「ドリーム・オブ・ミラーズ」
いきなり歌から始まるメイデンにしては大変珍しい曲。
攻撃的に始まるが一転、静かで柔らかな展開になる。
夢と現実を彷徨う歌で、展開が激しいので10分の長さを感じさせない。
ブルースの温かみのある熱い歌唱が聴ける。
激しいテンポチェンジはもはやさすがと言った所であろう。
これもまたドラマティックで最高の曲。
七曲目は「ザ・フォールン・エンジェル」
ブリティッシュメタルらしいインパクトのあるリフから始まる攻撃的な曲。
タイトル通り、おどろおどろしさと神秘さを高い次元で融合してみせ、メイデンらしいメタル曲に仕上げた。相変わらずベースが骨格を担っていて、一切の隙も感じない。
八曲目は「伝説の遊牧民」
まるで中近東を彷彿とさせるこの曲はメイデンにしては珍しいタイプのメロディーラインである。
まるで映画音楽である。
目を閉じると、果てしなく続く砂漠が映り込んでくる。　メイデンだからこそ作れた曲展開とメロディーは壮大な世界感を生み出した。
美しく物悲しく、しかし力強い長いインストや、憂いを帯びたギターソロ、もはやこれ以上望むのは罰当たりであろう。
まるで広大な砂漠をゆっくりと旅するような感覚に陥る。
九曲目は「アウト・オブ・ザ・サイレント・プラネット」ブルースの手によるSFタッチの曲。
タイトルからわかるとおり、夜空を彷彿させるギターから始まり、人類の危機を歌う。
まるで空から万遍なく絶望が降ってくるかのように、、、
激しい曲ながら、展開も多く、聴き応え満点の曲である。
十曲目は「ザ・シン・ライン・ビトウィーン・ラヴ・アンド・ヘイト」
メイデンにはなかったタイプの曲だが、このアルバムを締めくくるのに一番相応しいと思える曲である。
どこか人間らしい感情がかんじとれる曲で、個人的に一番好きな曲である。
歌詞も素晴らしい。
「願わくば俺の魂が飛んで行くように、、そうすれば永遠に生きられる」
ブルースはここでも最高の歌唱を聴かせてくれている。
コーラスでは、思わず愛する人を抱きしめたくなる。
そして夜中星空の下をふわふわと浮かぶような繊細でとても優しく暖かいインストが待っている。
そして美しいギターソロと共にブルースの悲しい歌声が響く。


もうこれは神アルバム。
これを聴いてなんも感じないなら、メロディーセンスや曲構成を感じる力が絶対的に足りません。
もう一回一からやりなおしてください。

それか激しいのばかりが好きな青二才には良さがわからないかも。
せいぜい精進してください。
激しいのに拘りをもつのはまだまだ青い証拠です。

全体的に大作が多いです。
しかしメンバーの演奏力や作曲力が高い為、飽きることなく聴けます。

「Fear Of The Dark」以降のメイデンの流れを汲んでいて、それを更に深化させたのがこのアルバムだと思う。

聞き込めば聞き込む程にメイデンの偉大さが身に沁みる奇跡的なアルバムです。

Wickermanを初めて聴いたとき鳥肌が立った。とうとうアイアンメイデンが、ハードロックが復活だ！メイデンは相変わらずの凄みを失っていなかった！テンポと曲調は次々と変わりスティーヴハリスのベースは唸りそしてブルースディッキンソンの声が迫ってくる！
