橋本徹氏監修のFree SoulコンピレーションシリーズのAretha Franklin版。ゴスペルをバックグラウンドとした重厚なサザンソウルシンガーだけに、Free Soulのコンセプトとしては、いささか重過ぎるのではないか？と最初は訝っていたけれど、聴いてみると確かにコンセプトに合った、気軽に心地良く聴ける選曲がなされている。逆にこういう聴き方もあるんだと、僕自身思わぬ発見でもあった。

中でも特に気持ちよいのがBreadの名曲のカバー"Make It With You"から、Curtis Mayfieldプロデュースの名曲"Sparkle"の流れ。"Make It With You"をカバーしていたのは、このコンピで初めて知ったんだけれど、Arethaの声で聴くこの曲は甘く切ないだけのラヴソングではなく、もっと神聖で大きな愛というものを与えてくれるような気がする。"Sparkle"は個人的に大好きで、この曲はもっと知られていいように思う。

Aretha Franklinを聴くのが初めての人にはこのコンピはうってつけだと思う。これをきっかけに、"Queen Of Soul"と呼ばれる彼女の素晴らしい歌の世界に少しでも触れて欲しいように思う。

アレサ・フランクリンをタイムリーに聴いていた世代ではありませんが、「懐かしい」感じがします。彼女の声はパワフルですが、繊細さも兼ね備えていて普段はささやく感じの曲を好き好んで聴く私でもすんなり聴けました。

晴れた日の休日の朝なんかにいかがでしょうか。
