昨年、突然ヴァーヴを解散させたリチャード・アシュクロフト、待望の初ソロ作。とはいえ基本的な音楽性やサウンドは、予想通りヴァーヴの名作『アーバン・ヒムス』の流れを汲むもので、ホーンやペダル・スティールの導入などフレキシブルなアレンジで音の幅が拡がったという印象だ。また当然のことながら、ヴァーヴの魅力でもあった流麗なストリングスによる奥行きのある音空間は本作でも健在だが、最大の違いは楽曲から伝わるポジティヴな明るさだろうか。個人的に彼の目指していた音楽は、もともと定型のバンドの枠内では限界があったように思うし、ヴァーヴというバンドを本気で好きになれなかった理由はそこにあった。その点、メンバー間のゴタゴタもなく、思い通りのアレンジ、自分のペースで作り上げた本作に漂う穏やかで開放的なムードは、ヴァーヴ時代にはなかったもので、彼の音楽ヴィジョンがダイレクトに音に反映された会心作だろう。 (保科好宏) --- 2000年07月号

１曲目のキラーチューンについて意見が分かれるところだが、ソロという誰にも頼ることなく、己の等身大で勝負してゆく道に入った彼にとっては、表現したい第一歩だったのだろう。
ヴァーヴでは演れなかった要素だ。自然に彼の内側から流れてきたような、あの旋律は、随分肩の力がぬけて、リスナーに新しい風を吹かせてくれる。
ヴァーヴというバンドがそれこそナイフのエッジ歩くような危うさで、恍惚な魅力を秘めたバンドだっただけに、その黒光りする部分をつい求めてしまいがちになるのだが、
しかしROCKバンドという形態、ROCKという性質それ自体が、衝動性をセンチメンタルな旋律にのせて歌い上げるものなら、仮面を被って風を切って進まねばならない性格もある。
1曲目はそのヴァーヴという仮面も衣装もとっぱらった、いや、ヴァーヴのROCKを卒業した生身の彼自身を表せる喜びのようなものを、感じるのだ。それはアーチスト個人の進化の視点からみれば何も驚くことではない。
1曲目を否定する商業的という言葉は、その中にある内省的な意図や要素まで有無をいわさず殺してしまう。ロックとはマニアックなアイテムになってはいけない。
チャートで市民権、ポピュラリティをか獲得してムーヴメントを起こしてゆかねば、それこそROCKは落ち目の方向を辿る。21世紀のROCKはいつまでも90年代末の狂気なROCKのままではいけないのだと思う。

といっても全体的にはまだソロで勝負する上での、力こぶのようなものも感じる。それはヴァーヴからの脱皮を図っている途上のような空気感もある。だが、曲自体はどれもさすが天才といいたくなるような、心をえぐって泣かせるセンスの曲ばかり。アルバム全体の流れで聴くとなおここちいい。

最高のヴォーカリストであると同時に最高のソングライターである彼の初ソロ作品は、
トラック,1さえなければ良かったと思います。


New York馬路で素敵!!
You On My Mind In My Sleep、アコースティック寄りのゆったりした曲調で癒されます…

他の曲達もトラック1以外は素晴らしいものばかりです。



UKロック最大のカリスマが再び舞い戻りました!!
