There will be many more artists like Beth Hirsch and many more albums like
Early Days as more and more people realise the fertility of the seam connecting modern trip-hop with old-school folk.
Beth Orton and
Dot Allison have already staked convincing claims, and Beth Hirsch's credentials appear impeccable: she has a lovely, fragile voice that evokes those of
Sandy Denny and
Jane Siberry, and she sang on Air's
Moon Safari.
Early Days is a promising but patchy affair: while there is obviously no problem at all with the vocals, they are asked too often to carry tunes that might be politely described as unassuming but are more often just negligible.
