デス声も入っているが，あくまで脇役．当然主役はシャロン嬢のソプラノボイス．１曲目のレストレスから，すばらしいメロディ展開．２曲目も出だしのデス声が，後のシャロン嬢の登場を期待させるいい前振りになっていると思います．最後のレストレス(クラシカル・ヴァージョン)もオリジナルよりもしっとり感があって，いい感じです．

The GatheringやAfter Foreverなどを輩出するフィーメール系ゴシックメタルの宝庫オランダ出身の「WITHIN TEMPTATION」が1997年に発表したファーストアルバムです。

個人的な思いで恐縮ですが、激戦地区とも過騰競争とも言えるフィメール系ゴシックメタル業界で生き残るカギは、（１）女性ボーカルが美しいこと、（２）楽曲が美しく個性的であること、（３）作品のたびに新しい側面を見せてくれること、の３つが必須だと思います。もちろんWithin Temptationはそれを満たしていると確信します。バンドの表看板であるシャロン・デン・アデル嬢はオペラの要素を導入した大変美しいソプラノヴォイスの持ち主。バンドとしてのキャラを決定づけるシャロン嬢が作り出す「美の世界」に対して、男性デス声とヘヴィーなギターリフという「醜の世界」との攻防戦を息をひそめて見守るという、ゴシックメタルならではの楽しみが満載です。

とはいいつつまだデビュー作ということもあってシャロン嬢の歌唱やバンド全体の音作りにも若干迷いのようなものが感じられるのも事実。次作「Mother Earth」の登場によって、ひとつの結論を導き出すのです。

シャロン嬢の美声が堪能できます。女声Voゴシック・メタルは数多いですが、先駆者であり
かつ未だに頂点だと思います。
エヴァネッセンスやナイトウィッシュなどで女声ゴシック・メタルに興味を持った方も是非。
両者よりほどポップではなく落ち着いた感じですが、楽曲のクオリティは負けていないと
思います。
