Recorded just months before his death it shows 'Trane continuing to press the boundaries of music, discovering both moments of quietness and harshness as he does. With only drummer Rashied Ali to accompany him 'Trane creates his own universe, which very few musicians have managed to do quite so completely. With the original four tracks and two extras ("Leo" and "Jupiter Variations") included this is an album of such brilliance that even after a hundred plays the listener still finds new things to discover. １９６７年２月２２日の録音で、死の５ヶ月まえ。演奏はコルトレーンとドラムのラッシド・アリとのデュオ。つまり、ベースやピアノは無しと言う特異な内容なので皆にオススメというわけではありません。しかし彼らのプレイは二人だけでも十分激しく、たっぷりしていて、物足りないと言うことは無く、むしろなぜもっと話題にならないのかと残念に思うくらいの出来で彼の最晩年の作品の中で最も知名度が低いのは残念でなりません。自分などは最近話題のオラトゥンジ・コンサートよりもこちらの方が彼のサックスが楽しめて好きなくらいです。

　Rashied Ali(ds)を従えた John Coltrane(ts) 最初で最後のデュオ・アルバム。1967年の Coltrane は2月15日「Stellar Regions」、2月22日「Interstellar Space」、2月から3月の間の録音が集められた「Expression」、そして4月23日のライブ「Olatunji Concert」の４枚がアルバム化されている。
　インパルス後期の Coltrane で時に顕著だった重力域から脱出しようとするかのような激烈な上昇ブローも、ここでは遂に成層圏を突破して束縛から解放されたかのような伸びやかさを獲得。オーロラのように複雑な彩りをみせるテナーの響きと、動摩擦の大きい音が嵐のように頭の中を通過していく様は気持ちよく爽快で、「Live in Japan」ではアルトによる演奏しか聴けない「Leo」もテナーの響きを活かしきったゾリゾリのブローとなっていて最高。
　ソプラノによる「My Favorite Things」で自由に天空を旋回した Coltrane がテナーで同高度の飛翔を感じさせる傑作だ。

所有しているUS版では"Leo"と"Jupiter Variation"が途中で入っていてイマイチなのだ。ボーナストラックを最後にまとめるこの編集は良いです。内容はラシードアリが物足りないことを除いて満点。つなぎで鈴をふっているのはシェップだそうだ。これをカルテットで(トレーン+アリス+ギャリソン+アリ)聴きたかったな。
