　1991年春リリース、次作「チューブラーベルズ２」の大ヒットの影に隠れてしまいがちだが、この作品は「ファイブマイルズアウト」や「クライシス」と肩を並べるほど僕の中では存在感のある作品である。マイケルは「ディスカバリー」のころの雰囲気を狙ったのかもしれない。ボーカルはマイケル自身が歌い、この作品のためにボイストレーニングをしたらしく感情がよく滲み出ている。4曲目と5曲目が当時好きだったが最もはまったのが6曲目、サイモンフィリップスが参加しているが、ドラマーだったらこんな曲でプレイしてみたいと誰もが思うだろう。この作品でチューブラー２の期待が更に高まったのだが、、、、、

長年在籍し、レーベルそのものと共に成長してきたといっても良いマイクとヴァージンの関係も、本作により解消されることとなった。理由はよく分からないが、やはりビジネスとアートは両立しなかったのかもしれない。そして、マイクがヴァージンへの惜別をこめて製作したのが本作。マイクのなんらかの意思表示かもしれないが、アーティスト名が彼の本名の「マイケル・オールドフィールド」になっている。

本作では、旧友サイモン・フィリップスのサポートを得て、大作trk6とそれ以外の歌モノという構成になっているが、なんと歌モノ５曲のリードボーカルをマイク自身が担当している。

まず歌モノだが、マイクの決して流暢とはいえないが、テンションの強い迫力ある歌声と、思いのほかヘヴィでマイナーなコ!ード展開が中心の前半４曲が印象に残る。そして、それが露払いだったかの如く、満を持して登場するtrk5の爽快なメロディとサウンド、マイクのギターソロに昇天してしまう！このtrk5は名曲！

そして、trk6が約２０分にわたってインストで展開されるが「アマロック」の影響を引きづったかのような、予測不能な混沌とした展開が緊張感を生む。個々のセグメントでは優しいメロディやサイモンとマイクの緊張感あるアンサンブルなどがあり、聴く側を引き込む。これも非常に質の高い作品。

この作品でレーベルも一新、そして彼の音楽性もここで変換点を迎える。以降は歌モノと大作インストの組み合わせというアルバムは製作されていない。その意味では本作は彼のキャリアの中期の到達点を示すともいえるだろう。

９１年発表の１６作目。マイケル・オールドフィールド名義で発表されたヴァージンでのラスト・アルバム。前半に小品５曲、後半に２０分弱の大作一曲という典型的なフォーマットに戻って制作された作品だが、その前半のヴォーカル曲をマイク自身が担当するという新しい試みがされている。前作とは一変してマイク自身はそのヴォーカルとギター、キーボードに専念しており、サイモン・フイリップス(dr)、デイヴ・レリー(b)、ミッキー・シモンズ(k)、アンディ・ロンハースト(k)、コートニー・パイン(sax) というバンド形態で制作されているのも本作の魅力だ。
１．はブラコン色が強いというのがまず驚くが、それよりもソウルフルに歌い上げるマイク自身のヴォーカルの力強さがインパクト大。決してうまいとまでは言わないが、「クライシス」でバックに埋もれるように拙いヴォーカルを聞かせていた彼からは想像も付かない真っ当な歌を聞かせている。２．も重い演奏に合わせてロジャ−・チャップリン張りのスロート・ヴォイスを聞かせており、これはこれで素晴しいと言わざるを得ない名曲に仕上がっている。大凡従来のマイクからは想像の付かない曲だが、彼の懐の深さは想像を超えているということだろう。泣叫ぶかのようなギターも素晴しい。３．もソウルっぽい曲。お世辞では無くクリス・ファーロウあたりが思い浮かぶ。４．はくそ重いレゲエだ。大作の方は明るく穏やかな雰囲気でポップな印象もあり、従来のものとは一味違っている。ラテンの雰囲気もあり。
数々の名ヴォーカリストが比喩表現として登場しているが誇張ではなく、それくらい本格的で太い喉をマイクが聞かせている異色作。そして数々の異色作の中でも最も力の入っているものと言えると思う。まさかマイクがブラック・ミュージックをやるとは・・・。躍動感溢れるギターも今までとは全く違う。埋もれてはいるが、絶対の自信作のはずだ。
