5.0 out of 5 stars マイクオールドフィールドの集大成的作品, 2002/10/4
まず、一曲が６０分ということに驚かされる。そして不協和音を狙っているのかと思わせるイントロに面食らってしまうだろう。かと思えば物足りなささえ感じる中盤のメロディー・・・。初めてこの曲を耳にした人は多かれ少なかれこのような印象を受けると思う。このアルバムは彼のファンの中でも評価が分かれているという。酷評される反面、「AMAROKこそ彼の最高傑作だ」と心酔する者も決して少なくない。

それは何故か。私が思うにこの曲は聴く度に表情が変わってくる。攻撃的、牧歌的、気だるげ、おおらか、緻密、壮大、神聖・・・。私一人でもこれだけの印象を持ったのだから、その他数限りない人数分この曲に対する感想は違っていて当然である。私も最初、この曲は正直なじみにくかった。まるごと一曲６０分というのもさる事ながら、起伏に乏しいと思っていたのだ。しかし、何回も聴いていくうちに、牧歌的で穏やかなメロディーに幸福感を覚えるようになった。そして終盤のクライマックス。この部分は初めて聴いた時にも深い感動に満たされた。マルチプレイヤー・マイクオールドフィールドの力量にも圧倒されたが、それ以上に音の美しさ、曲の素晴らしさに感動する。その証拠に、聴いている最中、作曲はもちろん楽器のほとんどを彼自らが演奏している事すら忘れてしまう。そして、「AMAROK」は今もなお私の中で変化し続けている。

ひとつのことを追いかけ続け、しかもそれで一定の評価を得続けるということは、並大抵のことではない。彼にとっては、初期の成功があまりにも大きかったため、このことはずっと重荷であったはずだ。８０年代のポップ路線は、彼にとってはそれ以前の評価との決別という意味もあったに違いない。そしてMoonlight Shadowなどで一定の評価を上げることで、これらの重荷を払拭した結果が、この作品の原点への再アプローチなのだろう。

ＡＭＡＲＯＫでは、当時可能だったデジタル技術をとことん利用しながら、しかもあらゆるアコースティック楽器を組み合わせて全く独創的な作品を作ることに成功している。
ＣＤ一枚で一曲というのは、極めて勇気がいることだ。
作品を演奏するのも全体を構成するのも大変な作業になる。
また、全体を通して聞かせるという強い自信がなければ出来ないことでもある。

この作品は、初期のマイクの作品に馴染んでいない層、つまりデジタル機器が既に身の回りにあふれていた世代に強く薦めたい。
音楽の可能性という点であれば、これほどのものはそうは手に入らないだろう。

ひとつの流行という、特定時間内の激しいコピー競争のなかで、新しい音や音楽は急速に古びてしまうのだが、そういったものから独立している音の世界を体験できるはずである。

　平成２年の夏にリリースされたマイクの意欲作、チューブラーベル２としてリリースしてもその名に恥じない作品だと思うのだが、マイクはバージンレーベルからチューブラーベル２を出すことを頑なに拒否した。もし本作がチューブラーベル２としてリリースされればおそらく数倍の売り上げを記録したかもしれない。内容は60分を少し超えた曲が1曲だけで、ギターやコンピュータサウンド、歯磨きの音、足音、モーター音、ラストは英国のサッチャー首相に似た声のナレーションとオマドーンのようなエスニック調の展開でラストを迎える。1年前にリリースされた「アースムービン」があまりにもマイクらしくない作品だったので、本作を聞いて溜飲を下げたファンは僕だけではなかったはずだ。
