1970年発表。キング・クリムゾンのセカンド・アルバム。有名なファースト『クリムゾン・キングの宮殿』のジャケットはバリー・ゴッパーの作品だったが、本作の幻想的な12人の人々を描いた作品は『12 Archtypes』と題されたTammo de Jonghの作品である。
曲は前作を踏襲するような表題曲『ポセイドンのめざめ』やホルストの『惑星』の『木星』をモチーフにした『デビルズ・トライアングル』、ジャズ的な要素と後のストイックな漆黒な美世界をも予感させる『キャット・フード』と名曲がめじろ押し。そしてそれらハードな曲を繋ぐ『ピース』と『ケイデンス・アンド・カスケイド(これはグレッグ・レイクでなくゴードン・ハスケルが歌っている)』の美しさ。キング・クリムゾンの全体像がまさにここに出そろった感がある。
ピート・シンフィールドの描く2つ目の詩世界が狂気と紙一重で音世界として立ち上がり希有な空間を完成している。そのジャケットの絵のような空間の深々しい狂気の奥底までは一生到達しえない予感がする作品だ。芸術的!!そしてそれは目まぐるしいメンバー交代という不安定な土壌の上に建っている。

ファーストアルバムがあまりに有名かつ偉大すぎでちょっとかわいそうなアルバムですね。
私自身は、このアルバムは、ファーストに負けず劣らずの作品だと思います。いや、勝っている部分もある。

1曲目は、21世紀をすっきりとさせた感じで、マイケル・ジャイルズのドラミングなどは、こっちの方がじっくり堪能できるし、タイトルチューンは、とにかく、クリムゾンでも１，２を争う名曲。
二番煎じは、二番煎じでも良くできた二番煎じ。好感です。北米では、一番売れたアルバムというのもうなずけます。
しかし、アルバムタイトルの誤訳は痛い！笑。

とかく「宮殿」の2番煎じと言われがちで実際構成は良く似ているが、達者なフルートが聴ける「ケイデンスとカスケイド」、マイケル・ジャイルズのドラムワークが冴え渡るタイトル曲（本当にうまい）、ビートルズの「カム・トゥゲザー」のベースラインを使ってロバート・フリップが大胆なアレンジを施した「キャット・フード」は魅力的な楽曲である。次作「リザード」でより顕著になるフリップのスタジオ録音でのアレンジ力・プロデュース力は際立っており、個人的にはポール・マッカートニーに匹敵するのではないかと思っている。
