前作XOで成功を収めたエリオットスミスの才能が
本物である事をまざまざと証明して見せたメジャー第二作目。

XOで打ち出したバンドサウンドをさらに前面に押し出した本作。
M7,M9のようなちょっとした小曲から
M1,M10のような必殺のポップソングまで
バラエティに富んだ楽曲はどれも素晴らしく、
前作に勝るとも劣らない出来になっています。

他のエリオットスミスのアルバムを聞いて気に入った方は言うまでもなく、
まだエリオットスミスを聞いた事がない方にもお薦めの作品。
必聴です！

作品を出す毎にサウンドや音楽的方向性を変えるアーティストは多いが、彼には必要ない。人は日々の生活に大きな変化や驚きを求め、日常の小さな生きた足跡を軽んじたり、失ってからその重みに気づく。生きるとは大変なこと。車から見た絶対的美しさの夕日、秋の近づく匂い、良い音楽や人との出会い。誰でも感じることができるのに、それすらできず経済的価値や地位と引き換えに無意識に競争している社会。そんな僕らの生きるということを感じさせる音楽。全年代対応型。

　シンガーソングライター（SSW）と呼ばれる人々が最も輝いていた時代はその言葉が生まれた70年代初頭の限られた時間のみで、その後彼等が脚光を浴びることは殆どなかったが、90年代に入り内省の時を迎えると、女性SSWたちが再び注目を集め始め、21世紀を迎えた今日でもシェリル・クロウ、アラニス・モリセット、フィオナ・アップル、サラ・マクラクランといったベテラン/中堅どころから、ダイド、ミッシェル・ブランチ、ヴァネッサ・カールトンなど有能な新人まで数多くのアーティストが活躍している。

　しかし男性SSWとなると事態は一変。70年代のSSWブーム以来、才能あるアーティストは出てもマーケットにソッポを向かれてばかりで、これといった動きはまったくなく、１人気を吐いているベックは別格として!着実にセールスを上げられるアーティストは、ロン・セクスミス、クリス・アイザック、ルーファス・ウェインライトなど数えるほどしか存在しない。

　そんな男性SSW不遇の時代にあって、このエリオット・スミスもまた、数少ない安定した人気を誇る実力派男性SSWである。マット・デイモン主演映画「グッド・ウィル・ハンティング」で大々的に彼の作品が取り上げられ、その中の"Ms. Misery"がアカデミー賞にノミネートされるほどの反響を呼んだので、あまりSSW系アーティストに馴染みはなくとも彼の名前ぐらいは知っているという方は結構多いのではなかろうか。
　さて本作はそんな彼がサントラでの成功を受けて発表したデビュー作『XO』('98)に続くメジャー第二弾アルバムであるが、囁くような優しい歌い口と、自らを取り巻く時代状況をしっかりと見据えた奥深いリリックはまさしくSSW系の作品そのものである。しかしサウンドの方は音の一粒一粒が明瞭に聞き取れるほど軽やかで煌びやかなギターやピアノの音色が綺麗に噛み合ったバンド・スタイルで、意外と派手な印象だ。そこにビートルズを少しひねったような独特な味わいのあるメロディが被さると、完全にエリオット・スミスの世界が出来上がる。思慮深く内省的な歌を歌いながらも、内に籠もりきることなく、どこか外へ向けて放たれてる感じがするところが大きな魅力だ。
