   1974年に重厚なタイトルをもつファンク＆ソウルアルバムである本作がリリースされたころ、スティービー・ワンダーは次から次へと作品を発表していた。本作でもいつも通り、ワンダーはストレートなラブソングに思いがけない肌触りと深みを与えている。心揺さぶるピアノ・バラード「Too Shy to Say」では恋に気後れする気持ちを歌い、「君とともに飛び去りたい、もうこれ以上ふたりですることがなくなるまで」という1節は、ワンダーがこれまで歌ったなかで最も悲しいフレーズと言える。また、ゆがんだファンクンナンバー「Boogie On Reggae Woman」やリチャード・ニクソン大統領を非難する怒りに満ちた「You Haven't Done Nothin'」のようなより激しいナンバーは、アルバムのトータル感を損なうことなく緊迫感をもたらしている。 （Steve Knopper ,Amazon.com）

前作"Innervisions"は間違い無くStevie Wonderのキャリアの中でも最高傑作と言われる程のクオリティの高さを持った作品であった。名実共にStevie Wonderはトップアーティストの1人として名声を得る事となった。だが、"Innervisions"発売後にStevieは生死に関わるほどの大きな事故に遭ってしまう。大事にも一命は取り留め、事故の後遺症等の多くの不安を抱えていたものの、すぐに創作活動に復帰し、僅か1年と少しの期間で前作に勝るとも劣らない名盤を創り上げた。それが今作"Fulfillingness' First Finale"だ。

僕はStevieがその事故によって大きな考え方の変化を体験したような気がする。前作に異様なほど取り憑いていた激しいストイシズムと緊張感が、この作品ではすっきりと抜けて、とてもリラックスした大らかなサウンドにがらりと様変わりした。そして心底音楽を楽しみながら創作した事が、曲を通して伝わってくる。
前作では、社会問題や色々な人間の心の内部に焦点を当てて詞を書いていたが、今作では人間が生きる中で必要とされる多くの大切なもの、そしてそれらの美しさがメインのテーマになっているように感じる。

とにかくこの音源を聴くと心の何処かがハッピーな気分になってしまう。温もりのあるサウンドと彼の笑顔が浮かんできそうな楽しい歌声で溢れている。「第一幕終了」と題されたこのアルバムはまさしく、これまで彼が多くの実験を経て創り上げてきたものの総決算だったのだと思う。
僕はStevieのアルバムの中で1番この作品が好きだ。ラストを飾る"Bird of Beauty"、"Please Don't Go"の壮大なフィナーレはいつ聴いても大きな感動を与えられる。

スティービーには名作が多数あるが、私のなかでベスト・スティービーをあげるとしたらこれ。『トーキング・ブック』や『キー・オブ・ライフ』等、他にも中期の名作はあるが（むしろこの2枚の方が名曲は多いかも）、捨て曲のないアルバムとしての出来の良さではピカイチ。このころのスティービーは、アイディアに溢れたいたことが感じ取れます。ちなみに隠れた名曲『1000億光年の彼方』は、クラプトンのマイ・フェイバリット・スティービー。（ライブでのカバーしていました）

1974年の前年に続くグラミー最優秀アルバム賞受賞作。
'71年初のセルフ・プロデュース作「青春の軌跡」から5作目、タイトルとジャケット・ワークからも明らかなように、自分の音楽人生の第一幕締め括りという意気込みで取り組んだ作品である。
前作に増しての素晴しさであり、次作「キー･オブ･ライフ」がなければ、最高傑作であったろう。

内容はますますバラエティーに富み、レゲエありファンクあり、ラテン風味も見せる。特にバラード曲が増え、ミディアム・バラードの「1000億光年の彼方」は日本でも大ヒットした。最近のベスト盤などには収められていないが、スティービーの唄のうまさを堪能できる名曲である。最良質のポピュラー・ミュージック・アルバムであり、当時でも「ソウル」の棚にあって違和感があったのを思い出す。

ポール・アンカ、ジャクソン5、パースエイションズ、今は亡きミニー・リパートンなどゲスト・ミュージシャンも豪華だが、その起用も音楽的で、客演のためのゲストになっていない所はさすがである。

この2000年リマスター盤では格段に音質向上され、更にこの芸術作品を堪能できる。
