   フランスのアヴァン・ポップ・デュオ、エールのサード・アルバムは、ソフィア・コッポラ監督による映画『ヴァージン・スーサイズ』のサウンドトラックだ。主人公となる10代の姉妹たちは、その美しさで地元の少年たちを魅了するが、謎の自殺で町に大きな衝撃を与える。満たされぬ渇望を描いたゴシック的で少々たわいなくもあるファンタジー映画であり、エールの不思議な“ピュア・ポップ”がぴったりとハマっている。

 「Playground Love」や「Highschool Lover」はため息のようなサキソフォーンと陶酔感あふれるキーボードにどっぷり浸っており、幼い恋人たち向けに砂糖をまぶしたかのような仕上がり。だが「Bathroom Girl」はスロー・モーションで動く絶世の美女を思わせる。しかし、「Cemetery Party」と「Dark Messages」が薄気味悪いパルスを打ち出すと、エールは映画の深いところに流れている不気味さをほのめかすようになっていく。「Dead Bodies」はゴシック風味全開のパニック・チューンで、墓の下から聴こえてくるような優しいコーラスで締めくくられる。（David Stubbs, Amazon.co.uk）

これらの曲は映画のサントラだが、その映画に出てくる四人姉妹の思春期の少女達の、背伸びしてもどこか幼気で壊れやすいガラスの心を上手く再現していると思う。
どこかモダンでクールな仕上がりだが、そこに艶やかさが混じり、その時の場面場面に合わせて、主人公の少女達の虚無的で退廃的な気だるさと性急すぎた感情をサウンドの中に練り込む事に成功しているといえよう。
せっかくなので映画も見て味わって欲しい。

これはエールの最高傑作でしょう！
ノスタルジックでロマンティックで素敵な音楽。１曲目は超名曲です。
この後に控えていたアルバムに期待が膨らみましたが、あまり良くなかったのが残念。そういうわけでエールをはじめて聴く人にはコレをお勧めします。

後に「フレンチタッチ」と総称された一連のフランス産エレクトロポップの最右翼であったAIR。不朽の名作「Moon Safari」の後だけに、その出来が期待されたこのアルバムは、まさにAIRそのものであった。「ヴァージン・スーサイズ」の監督ソフィア・コッポラ直々のご指名なだけあって、一曲目の「Playground Love」からもう、作品世界へとトリップさせてくれる。AIRがAIRらしかった時期に作られた、まさに最高傑作といっても過言ではないだろう。この後、マイク・ミルズ等を通じて米国音響系へと接近してゆくのだが、この時期の彼らの音楽が、今でも一番好きである。
