These musical upstarts play adrenalized and frenetic music that blends the most histrionic elements of punk, new wave, and glam. They are either throwbacks or visionaries, and the verdict changes from song to song. On the best cut, "White Traffic," the guitars are loud, sloppy, and high-pitched, the organ drones hysterically, the drums careen, and on top of it all future rock-god Rex John Shelverton (a cross between Ziggy Stardust and
Leif Garrett) wails with deep pathos. The results are fresh and exhilarating. The only real misstep here is Vue's cover of Suicide's "Girl," which adds nothing to the over-the-top weirdness of the original. Still, you have to admire them for trying. Among Sub Pop's fresh crop of rock & roll talent, Vue are the ones to watch for.
