パープルの第１期、ロッド・エヴァンスとニック・シンパー在籍時、リッチーよりもジョンの頑張ってた時代。
まず、オープニングの. Listen, Learn, Read Onにドギモを抜かれます。サイケで、スペーシーで、なんと言ってもロッドの『語り』にぐぐっと来ます。
ライブ定番のHard Road (Wring That Neck)、ヒット曲のKentucky Woman、 ものすごいアレンジのティナ・タナーのカヴァー・River Deep, Mountain High、ここまでやったぞビートルズ・We Can Work It Out、また、隠れた（でもないか？）オーケスト・レーションを含んだ最大の聞きものAnthemなどなど、息つく暇もないパフォーマンスの数々、この頃からリッチー、ジョン＆ペイスはやっぱり、タダ者ではなかったと実感できます。素晴らしい！！
