「ツバメ」「サイレント・イヴ」「笑顔を探して」などの代表作はもちろんのこと、「愛すること」や「あなたの愛になりたい」など、辛島美登里独特とも言える強靭且つ繊細な曲が盛り沢山。何より嬉しいのは、録音状態が良好だったのか、他のＣＤよりも高音の伸びが突出していることだ。これから彼女の世界を知ろうとされている方にも、既にファンの方にもお勧めの逸品と言っても過言ではないだろう。全ての女性の心を歌で代弁している彼女の姿勢は、どことなく八神純子に似ているように思える。正真正銘、実力派アーティストであることを再認識させられる一枚だ。

99年に発売のベストアルバム。
物静かな雰囲気のボーカルに、
確かな世界を築いているメロディーや
グローバル感の大きい詩から、
女性の心をストレートに捉えた詩までの、
今でもファンが多いアーチストだが、
このベストは、よくできている。
ヒット曲も入っていて、
辛島美登里の独特の世界の曲も、
もちろん収録されていて、
内容が濃いものに仕上がっている。
そもそも作家としてスタートした彼女だが、
現在も歌手活動を行っている。
そんな彼女のベスト・・・なかなかいいです。

個人的に、彼女のオリジナルアルバムにはたまに飽きがきてしまうのだが、このベスト盤は非常に好き。シングルにはならなかったが比較的シングル向きの曲、といった感じの曲も収録されていて、まったく飽きない。特にバラードは秀逸である。
アルバム『恋愛事情』収録の「Friends」はシンセサイザーによるイントロの段階でまず耳を引きつけられる。十代の頃、妹とよくこの曲を聴いたが、ふたりしてこのイントロに「心が洗われるような気がする」と言い合っていたものだった。
「愛すること」はNHKのドラマ『ラスト・ラブ』の主題歌だった（憶えている人、いるでしょうか？）。切実かつ悲痛な心の叫びが胸に突き刺さる。どこかもの悲しげな彼女の歌声と相まって、耳に残る曲である。
「平凡」は不倫をテーマにした一曲。美しいピアノの演奏と伸びの良い高音の歌。歌詞の風景描写にも哀愁が漂っていて素晴らしい。これは本当に“聴かせる”一曲。
「Half and Half‐私自身‐」は少しエキゾチックな雰囲気。サビのメロディーに勢いが感じられる。すぐに口ずさめてしまうメロディーだ。
そして、なんと言っても「虹の地球」である。NHK『夢色絵の具』のテーマソングだった（余談だが、彼女の「あなたを愛している」はNHK-BSドラマ『チョコレート革命』の主題歌だった。彼女と縁の深いNHKに感謝・感謝）。これはもう、松田聖子の「瑠璃色の地球」に匹敵する一曲である。〈わたしを染めてゆく　恋は絵の具のよう　誰かと混ざりあい　世界は増えてゆく〉――なんという名比喩であろうか！詞は恋を謳っているが、壮大な人類愛を謳っているようにも思えてくるのは私だけではないだろう。キャッチーなメロディー、イントロの、ライトながらも明確に聞こえるピアノ、流麗なバイオリン…曲のつくりも非の打ち所がない。何度、この美しさ、壮大さに感動し、身が打ち震えたかわからない。後世に残されるべき一曲である。
たくさんの人に聴いてもらいたいアルバム。彼女のファンでなくとも、愛聴盤になること間違いなしです。
