イアン・カーティスの死の2週間前に収録したライヴとスタジオ録音の未発表曲で構成された81年の3作目。Disc1の未発表曲はともかくDisc2のライヴはテンションが高い。底無しの井戸の中を落ちていくような気分にさせる虚無的な世界観はやはり唯一無比。


Album Details

2007 digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of the influential Manchester quartet's 1981 posthumous compilation album. Joy Division's influence on modern music is not only based around the band's unique sound, but also their vision, their personalities and their intense and troubled vocalist, Ian Curtis who committed suicide on the eve of their first tour of the U.S. Disc One features the original album containing 20 tracks including live and previously unreleased studio tracks. Disc Two features 14 tracks recorded live at High Wycombe Town Hall in February of 1980. Rhino UK.

~アナログ発売当時、このアルバムは豪華な装丁がされ2枚に分けられていた。1枚に未発表曲音源、もう1枚にはイアンが他界する2週間前の80年5月2日、バーミンガム大学でのラスト・ライブが収められている。
未発表といいながらもJDの中でも屈指の名曲であろう「Exercise One」や後に何度もベスト盤にも収録されている「Dead Soul」。それにベルヴェッツの名曲「Sister~~ Ray」のカヴァーなど聴きどころは満載である。

ライブ音源はライブというよりドラマのようにスリリングな内容である。この日が初披露となるオープニングの「Ceremony」ではいきなりマイクの音源が入っておらず、遠くで必死に叫ぶイアンのボーカルが微かに聞こえる。更に「Passover」では曲の出だしでギターはしくじるは途中でドラムが叩き損なってしまいそれに敏感に反応したイアンが一小節くらいまるまる歌を止~~める。
「Decades」ではもうろうと意識を無くしかけながらふりしぼるように歌い、この後ステージで倒れ込んでしまう。抱えられるようにステージを降りたイアンであるが、熱狂的なアンコールに応え最後の曲「Digital」を信じられないようなハイテンションで歌いきるのである。

そしてこれが生前最後の熱唱となった。ファンならずとも是非ともこの記録を耳にしてほしい。~

Joy Divisionのﾗｽﾄ･ﾗｲｳﾞ、つまりｲｱﾝ･ｶｰﾃｨｽが自殺する数週間前のﾗｲｳﾞとなる貴重な音源がこの『Still』である。
この『Still』の前半にはｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ未収録曲が収録されているが、あくまでもメインは後半のライヴ音源である。
まずは10曲目｢Sister Ray｣、もちろんVelvet Undergroundの名曲である。VUﾌｧﾝにはうれしい一曲。
11曲目｢Ceremony｣、これは確か後にNew Orderのﾃﾞﾋﾞｭｰ･ｼﾝｸﾞﾙとなる曲。(間違ってるかも。)それをｲｱﾝ･ｶｰﾃｨｽがVo.でやっているという貴重な音源。
14曲目｢Passover｣、モリスのドラムが致命的なミスをする。
「こんなのじゃ歌えるか！」といった感じにｲｱﾝのｳﾞｫｰｶﾙが一回止まる。
15曲目｢New Dawn Fades｣、ﾊﾞｰﾆｰのｷﾞﾀｰがﾐｽりまくる。ﾐｽをしていない所もかなり際どい演奏。
20曲目｢Digital｣、ｲｱﾝ･ｶｰﾃｨｽが人生の最後に唄った曲。
ｲｱﾝの体調は最悪。発作をおこして口から血を流しながら倒れたりしていたらしい。
それでも、観客のｱﾝｺｰﾙに答えて最後の力を振り絞りｲｱﾝ･ｶｰﾃｨｽ最期の絶叫を絞り出した。

と言った感じに、ﾗｲｳﾞの質自体はJoy Divisionの中でもかなり低い内容。
これは、この時期に行われていた過酷なﾖｰﾛｯﾊﾟ･ﾂｱｰからくる極度の疲労が原因だろう。
しかし、この最悪の状態のﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞから放たれるｷﾞﾘｷﾞﾘ感は聴く者を圧倒するものがある。このｷﾞﾘｷﾞﾘ感は本当に凄い。
この『Still』の音源はこういったﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞの最悪な状態の時期の音源ということをちゃんと知って聴いてもらいたい。
そして、Joy Divisionの事を有る程度知ってから聴いてもらいたい作品である。

このＣＤのもととなるＬＰはリリースされた。
おそらくイギリスから、巡り巡って２枚組のそのＬＰが手元にある。

個人的には、演奏途中から始まる「Ceremony」のライヴヴァージョンに尽きると思う。もちろん音質はよくない、しかし形容しがたいエネルギーが凝縮されている。
もう何度も何度もヘッドホンで爆音にして聴いた、でも伝わってくるものは再生回数に比例して減るどころか、増幅されることすらある。これ程読書などのＢＧＭとして相応しくない音楽を、他に殆ど知らない。

ジョイディヴィジョンの音楽は、「暗い」とよく形容されるが、特に「Ceremony」などには、その底にある物凄い熱さを感じる。
