バンド名を冠したこのアルバムのカバーには、薄気味悪いマスクをかぶったスリップノットの面々が写っている。要保護者指導のラベルが貼られていることからも分かるように暗いイメージだ。だがスリップノットは、才能のなさを誇張表現でごまかそうとする頭のおかしなピエロ集団などではない。スリップノットのサウンドはコーンらに恩義があるとは言え、よりアグレッシブで創造的だ。実際、スレイヤーやデスメタルの方により近いが、それでいて聴き応えがあり、驚くほどにメロディが豊かだ。スリップノットと90年代にはやったネオメタル・ラップバンドに共通するのは(コーン、リンプ・ビズキットなどを手がけた)プロデューサーのロス・ロビンソンで、このアイオワ育ちのバンドを見出した彼は、自らのレーベルI Am Recordsに引き込んだ。ロビンソンのこの傑作は素晴らしいほどぞくぞくするパーカッション、サンプラー、DJ、メタリックグラインドのギターなどが入り混じっており、ヴォーカルのコリィ・テイラーの情感あふれる歌いっぷりと幅広い声域で実に聴き応えのあるものになっている。万人向けではないが、ハードな音楽が好きなファンなら理屈抜きで満足してもらえる。 --Katherine Turman

当時のシーンを震撼させたSLIPKNOTのデビュー作。タイトルはST。
表面的な音だけを聴けば、今作は間違いなく「混沌」だの「狂気」だの
「破壊的衝動」だの「轟音大爆発」だのといった言葉が非常にお似合いな1枚だと言える。
いずれも立派な事実で、今作を聴いて「ウルサイ」と思わなければ

それこそ何を聴いて育ってきたんだと問いたくなるほど騒々しい音楽であるのに差異はない。

しかし。やはりそれらは彼らの被っている覆面よろしく表面上のものでしかないと私は思う。
そもそも、こんな喧しくて忙しい音楽をずっと聴いていたいなどと思う人は
ポップミュージック人口と比較すれば絶対的に少ないだろうし、そんな界隈なのだから

こうした喧しい音楽は淘汰されていくのが常というもの（のハズ）!。
街でポップ主義者とデスコア主義者のどちらを探すのが容易なのかを考えればすぐに判ることだ。
ところが。実際にSLIPKNOTのデビュー作である今作は、大衆音楽的とも呼べる絶大な支持を集めた。
それはなぜか。理由は簡単。「キャッチー」で「ポップ」だからである。

要旨をまとめると、今作は、表面的には淘汰されかねない喧しい音楽なのだが
実はとことんポップな大衆音楽であった、ということなのである。
覚えやすいメロディに、実力派のリズム隊が織り成す重圧濃厚重奏による単純なカッコ良さ。
そしてデスを中心にクリア・ラップと、その才能を存分に披露するボーカルの力量。

まさしく売れるために生まれてきたような。そう思わざるを得ない要素がてんこ盛りである。

怒鳴って、暴れて、唾!吐いて、中指立てて、頭振り回して、とことん"バカ"になりきる。
最高にハイテンションなエンターテイメントロック。体験しないのは勿体無い。

これを聴いたのは６〜７年ぐらい前だけど、当時すごく革新的でカッコ良い音だと思った。
この音は特に、どうしても前向きになれないような状況で生きている中学、高校生ぐらいの少年には強くオススメできる。
そこそこ楽しい人生を送ってる人より、良くない環境の中で、「どうにかしたい」ともがき苦しみながら生きている人の方がグッとくるのではないか。

このアルバムでラウドシーンがある意味で限界まできてしまった
と言ってしまえるほど、凄まじい衝撃があったアルバムです。
メンバー全員がマスクをしていますが、ただのイロモノバンドではなく、
曲のクオリティーが素晴らしい。
ＫＯＲＮ、ＬＩＮＰＢＩＺＫＩＴなどのムーブメントとはまた違う

爆発力、破壊力、そしてその中に見事にマッチしているＤＪのスクラッチ、
パーカッション、さらには変化自在なＶｏと全てが一体化しており、
違和感がまったく感じさせない仕上がり。
こちらの１ｓｔのほうが次作よりもある意味ではキャッチーな曲が
多いような気がします。

まさに究極のラウドミュージック。
