1970年にリリースされたジェシ・ディヴィスの1stアルバム。スワンプ・ロックの代表的な一枚。
ジェシ・エド・ディヴィスはオクラホマ出身のギタリストで、カイオワ族とコマンチ族の血を引く生粋のネイティヴ・アメリカン。タジ・マハールのバンド・メンバーとして名をあげ、また同郷のレオン・ラッセルとの親交を通じてスワンプ・ロック人脈を広げ、数多くのレコーディング・セッションに起用される。そして、エリック・クラプトンの助力でロンドンでアルバムの制作を開始、ロサンゼルスで追加の録音を行って完成された。バックにはジェシのソロ・デビューを祝うかのように、エリック・クラプトン、レオン・ラッセル、ラリー・ネクテルを始めとしてそうそうたるメンバーが集まり、ジェシの交友関係の広さやミュージシャン仲間うちでの人気を物語る。
ジェシ・ディヴィスの持ち味はスライド・ギターとルーズなボーカル。噛めば噛むほど味が出る。アメリカの様々なルーツ・ミュージックを濃縮したような、ダシの旨みで食わせるような極上の音楽が聴くことができる。
トロっとした味わいの1).Reno Street Incident、ジェシと対照的なクラプトンの端正なソロが聴ける3).Washita Love Child、仲良しのお祭騒ぎ的な4).Every Night Is Saturday Night、スリリングな展開の5).You Belladonna You・・・。
カバー曲が2曲。6).Rock & Roll Gypsiesは、後にジェシのプロデュースでアルバムをリリースする同郷のロジャー・ティリスンの作。有名になる前のロバート・パーマーが在籍したヴィネガー・ジョーでも取り上げられている名曲。8).Crazy Loveは言わずと知れたヴァン・モリソンの代表曲。オリジナルよりこちらのほうがいいという声さえある名演。

７０年、アトコよりリリースの初リーダー作。デヴュー盤にして、
この内容、参加ミュージシャンの華やかさには目を見張るものがあ
る。（クラプトン、ジョン・サイモン、ジャッキー・ロマックス､ア
ラン・ホワイト、ベン・シドランなど枚挙ない。）

恐らく英国からは、ローリング・ストーンズの「ロックン・ロール

・サーカス」出演時での人脈がベースになっていると思われ、英米
入り乱れての熱い共演は聞き手に”緊張感”が求められるだろう。

全８曲中、６曲がジェシの自作。残る２曲がカバーとなっており、
タジ・マハルなどの活動を経た、彼の集大成であることは間違いな
い。6はロジャー・ティリスン作、（後に彼のアルバムを制作する。）

8はヴァン・モリソン作の名曲で、しっとりと唄いこまれる声には思
わず、聴き入ってしまう。
自作では特に7が光る。イントロのシタールに導かれての展開はＳ
ＳＷ風でもあり、温かみが感じられる佳曲。
また、ジャンプ・ナンバー4も秀逸。これが、このアルバムの”動”
の軸なら、前者は”静”の重要作。

全体的に流れる、ゴスペル・タッチのバッキング・ヴォーカルや彼
特有のギター（テレキャスにレズリー・スピーカーを通した音）も
効果絶大でアルバムのトーンを決定付けに一役買っている。
制作はジェシ本人でエンジニアはあのグリーン・ジョーンズ。

”スワンプの名作”とは昔からの形容だが、ＳＳＷの視点で聞い
てみるのも、面白いかもしれない。

最高のスワンプ・ロッカー、ジェシ・エド・デイヴィスの1stアルバム。70年代ロックの隠れた名盤とだと思います。アルバム全体に漂う泥臭い香り。けだるいボーカル、絶妙なタッチのギターが最高です。エリック・クラプトン、リオン・ラッセル、ジョン・サイモンほか、豪華ゲストによる演奏も素晴らしく、ルーツ・ロックファンのみならず、全ての音楽好きにおすすめしたい一枚です。
