大化け。インディ時代は暗いアート指向に耽っていたビジュアル系4人組の大手第1弾だが,白のイメージにネオ・クラ色満載の気高いパワー・メタルに大変身。しかし突然C&Wや俗なバラードも飛び出す。やっぱり壊れてるのか。インパクトは強い。

X-JAPANの落とし子的な“ビジュアル系”4人組のメジャー・デビュー作。予想以上にハード&メタルなサウンドを志向していることに、まずビックリ。しかも、収録曲の約半数が、独自の美意識とクラシカルな素養をふんだんに盛り込んだ劇的展開バリバリの疾走チューンだったのだから、さらに驚いてしまった。耽美感覚が傑出した(5)、『あらいぐまラスカル』みたいなカントリー・タッチの(7)といった曲も収めるものの、「マイム・マイム」を思わせるイントロが印象的な(3)、シングルの(4)、ヒロイックな歌詞もハマりの(9)なんかは、まんま欧州メロディック・パワー・メタル風。当の彼らが、ハロウィンやANGRAといったその手の洋楽メタルをどの程度聴き込んでいるかどうかは定かではないものの、“いかにもビジュアル系”的なヴォーカルの歌い方や、薄っぺらいサウンド・プロダクションを改善していけば、その世界はさらに大きく広がっていくに違いない。 (奥村裕司) --- 2000年01月号

綺麗なアルバムです。
歌詞の内容等を考えてみれば、ただ「綺麗」で片付けられないとは思います。
でも、少年らしい潔癖さと無邪気さと好奇心を併せ持った歌詞や写真のイメージには、陳腐ですが「綺麗」と言う言葉しか思いつきません。
まさに「mind soap」と言うタイトルにそれが集約されているのではないでしょうか。

そしてリーダー華月のイメージした詞の世界観を、高い歌唱力を持つYUKIが見事に体現しています。
YUKIの歌は最近のポップ音楽らしい歌い方とは違うように思いますが、それがRaphaelの良さを増しています。声量と伸びが素晴らしいです。

華月の歌詞はきっと誰もが通るであろう青春の苦悩(と、喜び)を表しています。
それこそが共感する10代の少年少女達のカリスマたらしめたのだと思います。
私は彼らが「癒しの天使」と銘打って出始めた頃、胡散臭いとしか思っていませんでしたが、その自称は間違っていなかったのだな、と改めて思いました。
悩んでいる10代にぜひおすすめしたい一枚です。

説得力のある重い演奏、幻想的で、切なげで、孤高な歌詞。２０歳前後とは思えないほど深く、絶倫した才能を感じさせてくれます。それでいて、やっぱりどこかにパトスがあるような気がして、彼ららしいと思います。　私は特に「吟遊詩人の涙」という曲がお気に入りです。変則的なリズムのドラムがいい味を出す、Raphael特有の虚無感があるトラックです。はちきれたように早いギターにも注目。

格好だけのヴィジュアル系バンドが多い御時世ですが、このRaphaelは音楽面もしっかりしています。
蓋を開けてみれば、疾走メロディックチューンの嵐。
ボーカルの力の無さとギターソロの短さを除けば、立派なメロディックスピードメタルです。
V系だからと毛嫌いしてる人も聴いてみる価値ありです。
