MR.BIGも久々に活動を再開し、このところ話題も豊富になってきたスーパー・ベーシスト、ビリー・シーンのもうひとつのプロジェクト“ナイアシン”の新作が登場した。今回もジョン・ノヴェロ、デニス・チェンバースとのトリオで、ハイパーでバカテクなインストを聴かせてくれている。前2作と比べると、グループとしてさらにまとまりがよくなったというか、例によっての超難曲を、スーパー・テクニックを披露しながらもしっかりとアンサンブルで聴かせているところは、すごいと思う。特にビリーとデニスのコンビネーションがよくなり、さらに濃密なサウンドになっている。そしてそんなリズムに乗ったジョンのオルガン・プレイもより多彩となり、グループとしての音楽性の幅広さを見事に表わしている。また今回は1曲でグレン・ヒューズとスティーヴ・ルカサーが参加し、ブルージィなプレイを聴かせてくれているというのも話題を呼ぶことだろう。 (熊谷美広) --- 1999年12月号

運良くこのバンドのライブを見たことがあるが、そりゃ~~~~~ぶっとんだもんさ。ビリーシーンのベースソロはちょいとツーマッチだけれど。相変わらずジョンノベロのハモンドはシャープに決まっている。
チェインバースも後ろからプッシュしまくり。

でこのアルバムはゲストにスティーブルカサー／グレンヒューズが参加。印象としてはやや足踏み状態かね。悪くはないんだけど。

　ジャズ及びフュージョン色はかなり濃い作品だが、個人的にはロックアルバムとして聴いている。（そんなことは、聴く人によってそれぞれでどうでもよいのだが・・・）ハモンド・オルガンの音色は本当ROCKにもぴったりで、格好いい。このアルバムのサウンドが気に入った方は、ぜひ「ELP」のアルバム「タルカス」を聴いてみるとよいでしょう。（既に聴いているか・・・？）
　くどいですが、個人的にELPの「タルカス」のようなサウンドが大好きなので、楽しめました。
　メジャーな方々で（最近）こういったサウンドで勝負されている方ほとんど見当たらないので、私にとっては、貴重な「プロジェクト」であります。

　ビリー・シーンの「うねる」ベースも魅力です。

NIACINというバンドを宣伝するに当たってレコード会社は悪戦苦闘したらしい。サウンドはロックではないし、かと言ってビリ-シ-ンの知名度はジャズ・フュージョンファンの間では殆ど０に近いという事で雑誌等に取り上げて貰えないというのが理由だそうだが、これが事実なら、私に言わせればジャズ・フュージョンファンってのは"聴かず嫌い"が多いと言う事になる。ところで、今回の新作ですが、前作の延長といった感じだが、曲の合間のソロパートが、かなり増幅されているのが特徴。特にデニス・チェンバ-スのドラムは相変わらず凄い。HR/HMファンの私が気に入るサウンドなので、JAZZ･FUSIONファンも気に入ると思う。けど、VAN HALENのカヴァ-とスティ-ヴ・ルカサ-＆グレン・ヒュ-ズが参加した曲は、あまりインパクトを感じなかったな。
