　70年代後半のポスト・パンクの象徴的なバンドであるギャング・オブ・フォーが79年に発表した超傑作の１stに、ロンドンのアビー・ロード・スタジオにてリマスタリングが施された再発盤。一聴して強烈に印象付けられるのはやはりアンディ・ギルのギター。その変幻自在に鋭く切り込んでくるようなソリッドな音は、もう快感の一語に尽きます。そして、この上ない高揚感を生み出すパワフルなドラムとベース、聴き手の意表をつくメロディカ、醒めているようでいて時折感情的になるジョン・キングのヴォーカルにも痺れまくりです。聴く度に体中が熱くなります。

彼らがまだ大学生だった１９７７年にイングランドのリーズで結成された文字通り４人組のバンド。パンクの嵐が吹き荒れる英国音楽界において、そのポリティカルな姿勢と歌詞は、充分にパンク・ロックの持っていたラディカリズムを踏襲するものであったわけですが、サウンド面ではPistolsスタイルの所謂ビート・パンクス達とは一線を画した個性的なモノを持っていました。これは１９７９年にリリースされたデビュー・アルバムなわけですが、この時点で彼らのスタイルは確立されていたと言っていいでしょう。Jon Kingのヴォーカルは冷淡的でシニカル、そして毒のようなモノを兼ね備えたクセのあるもので、Andy Gillのソリッドにカッティングされた、俗に言うガチャ・ガチャ・ギターはバンドの顔であり、性急で何かに追われるかのような緊張感のあるビートとともに、非常に個性的かつ革新的なサウンドもありました。決してラヴ・ソングを歌わない、徹底した社会派メッセージを痛烈に突きつけるスタイルは、当時大きな物議を醸しましたが、その妥協を許さないポリティカルな姿勢は、後の多くのバンド達に多大なる影響を与えました。ＵＫロック史上かけがえのない財産として、今も存在感は衰えない凄いアルバムです。大傑作！

いわゆるパンクバンドではないが、ラディカルさでは最もパンクらしいアルバム。セックスピストルズを初めて聴いた時、歌詞は別として音はあまりに普通のロックだったことに少なからず失望した。当時はクラッシュもニューヨークパンクも自分にとっては同様であったけど、その後このアルバムを聴いて、これこそがパンクの「音」なのだと確信めいたものを感じた。ガリガリ、ゴリゴリした居心地の悪い音＝出口のない閉塞感や生きにくい社会へのアガキのようなリアルな響き。歌詞でも「歴史とは強者のものである」とか「家では観光客のように感じる」とか独特のセンスを感じる。ジャケットはインディアンがカウボーイにだまされる様子が描かれている。彼らはパンクファッションとは無縁で体のラインが出る服を好まず、いつもダボっとしたコートとか着ていたらしい。個人的にはレディオヘッドの「クリープ」の途中で入るガガッというギターを聴くとこの「四人組」を思い出す。
