Rock and rap have proved consistently strange bedfellows. From
Run DMC's strange courtship of
Aerosmith to
Anthrax getting involved with
Public Enemy, seemingly polar opposites have spawned a whole musical genre "Frat-rock", as popularised by the likes of
Korn,
Limp Bizkit and
Kid Rock, and as loved by kids in big shorts. Crazy Town's
The Gift of the Game neatly slots into this category--performed by a bunch of tattooed men in big shorts, who sing about girls with tongue studs. They obviously carry some clout, amassing an impressive guest roster for a debut album, including godfathers of the scene
Red Hot Chili Peppers on stand-out track "Butterfly" and instant credibility in the shape of
KRS-One on the storming "B-Boy 2000". As debut albums go, this is about as accomplished and cocksure as you can get.
