　当初はデス・メタル系バンドとしてスタートした、スウェーデンの TIAMAT。しかし、咆哮するデス・ヴォイスからは早々に足を洗い、THE SISTERS OF MERCY 的な暗黒サウンドに移行する。抑揚を抑えた低音のヴォーカルは、日本のお経を思わせるものさえある。一方で、シンセサイザーや、女性コーラスを伴い、叙情性を持たせたメロディーは高く評価されており、ヨーロッパではカルト的な人気がある。現在はニュー・ウェイヴ/ゴシックに分類されることが多い。

　日本ではあまり馴染みのないサウンドだが、唯一、ソフト・バレエというバンドがある程度近い音楽性をしている。スキン・ヘッドに近い短髪のヘア・スタイルなど、ファッションにも共通点がある。

　さて、抑揚を抑えた中にも、高揚感のある演奏をしていた前作と異なり、本作はポップであるが、非常にシンプルな演奏となっている。マニアック度は更に増したかも知れない。しかし、なかなか高品質でもあり、深淵なダーク・ロックが嫌いでないなら、気に入るかも知れない。

　尚、中心人物のヨハン・エドルンドは、同時期、AYREON プロジェクトにも参加。美しいエレクトリック・サウンドの名曲「My House on Mars/火星の我が家」を残している。

前作「a deeper kind〜」は非常に凝った楽曲作りで少々マニアックにはなったものの、独自の世界観を高い次元で完璧に築いていた。その前作に比べると今作に収められている楽曲はどれもストレート。アレンジもシンプルでメロディも解りやすくなっている。より普通のロック・バンドへ近ずいた感じ。マイナー調ではあるが、メロディがキャッチーな為、絶望的と言える程の暗さは無い。 普遍的な要素が増えた分、過去の作品に比べるとアルバム全体を通しての印象は薄い。又、どこか突き抜けない印象も。 尚、今作ではギタリスト脱退の為、エドランドがGuも兼任している。
