Japanese edition of 1999 posthumous concert release for late great French jazz pianist Petrucciani. Contains a bonus CD single with his interpretation of Billy Strayhorn's classic 'Take The 'A' Train' limited to the initial pressing only. A combined total of nine tracks. The extra disc comes in a slipcase sleeve that's taped to the back of the album, which is in a standard jewel case.

このライブはまさに現場で観ました。彼はずっと長い間ファンだったのですが、ライブで観ることが出来たのは残念ながら後にも先にもこれ一回。でも、これ一回のライブでどれだけ凄いアーティストか良く分かりました。スティーブガッドや、アンソニージャクソンと一緒にもの凄いドライブ感。あれは、移転前の地下にあったこじんまりとしたブルーノートでしたよね。当然のように超満員のファンの前でガッツのある、しかし繊細な演奏をぐいぐいやってましたね。シングルCDのようなのがおまけでもう一枚ついてますが、これに一曲だけ入っているのが、あの１８番の”A TRAIN”。とどめの一撃のような演奏。スティーブも例によっていきっぱなし！　これ一曲聴けばあれがどれだけ凄いコンサートだったか分ります。
私もミッシェルがお亡くなりになった時、ブルーノートに予約を入れて彼が再来日するのを楽しみにしていました。残念ですよね。

アルバムの特徴を一言でいうと、パンチが効いているのに旨みもある演奏といえる。
しかも何度聴いても飽きが来ない。
ぺトルチアーニはもともとタッチが明晰だから、当然演奏も輪郭のくっきりしたものになる。
それでいて、演奏からリリカルさは失われていない。
さらに、妙な気負いなく演奏しているので、聴いていて疲れるようなことがない。

おまけに、ドラムがガッドならリズム面は当然文句なし。
実際、シャープなガッドのドラミングはぺトルチアーニとの相性が抜群だ。
このコンビはぺトルチアーニの夭折で晩年の限られた期間だけなのが実に残念だ。

ピアノトリオ好きに真っ先に推薦する超名盤である。

　私がもし、友人にジャズ・ピアニストをもし一人勧めるとしたら、キース・ジャレットや、チック・コリアなどを押しのけて、このミシェル・ペトルチアーニを間違いなく勧めるだろう。

　本作は兼ねてからペトルチアーニの願いだったという、アンソニー・ジャクソン、スティーブ・ガッドとのトリオのライブ盤で、ブルーノート東京で収録された。「ソー・ホワット」を除く、全曲ペトルチアーニの自作曲で、どの曲も楽しく美しいメロディなのだが、私は「セフテンバー・セカンド」を推したい。あのフレーズが頭から離れない。個人的にはペトルチアーニの中で一番好きな曲です。

　演奏の素晴らしさもやはり特筆できます。全体にテンションが高く、ペトルチアーニが絶好調だ。しかし、ややアンソニー・ジャクソンのベースの音量が低く、聞こえにくいのが残念で、ガッドのドラムも、個人的にはDVDで出ている、同時期のライブ『ライブ・イン・コンサート』の方が調子がいいと思う。

　しかし、ペトルチアーニが最後に日本にきた時の演奏と言う事もあり、とても貴重なものなのは間違いなく、演奏自体も本当に素晴らしい。音楽ファンなら一度は聴いていただきたい１枚です。
