   慢性疲労症候群という聞き慣れない病気のため、しばらく活動を休止していたキース・ジャレットは1998年録音の本作によって見事に復活した。自宅のスタジオで録音したソロ・ピアノ集。曲は<6>のメドレーの後半に自作を配している以外はすべてスタンダード&トラッド。それまで部分的にソロ・ピアノでスタンダードを演奏することはあっても、本作のようなソロ・ピアノによるスタンダード曲集というのは、キースにとってこれが初めてのことで、その点でも特筆すべき作品。
   アプローチはいたってシンプルで、いかにメロディの美しさを伝えるか、その一点に心血を注いでいるかのような演奏だ。変わったアレンジで驚かせてやろうなんて下心は微塵もなく、誠心誠意、原曲の美しさを際立たせる純真無垢なプレイに徹している。この曲、こんなに美しい曲だったっけと感じ入る瞬間が何度も訪れる。すべてゆっくりしたテンポの演奏。バラード集といっていい内容だが、単なるバラード集ではなく、そこには敬虔（けいけん）なムードに包まれたキースならではの世界がある。（市川正二）

97年頃から重度の慢性疲労症候群に悩まされていたという,キースの復活第1弾。彼にとっては初めての,スタジオ録音によるソロ・スタンダード集だが,曲解釈もさすがだし,メロディを紡いでいくようなそのプレイは瑞々しく,息を呑むほど美しい。キース健在だ。

難病復帰からの第一作。第一印象は「ピアノの音が違う」だった。おそらくヴェゼンドルファーと思われるピアノからは、まったく装飾というものを払拭した「素」の美しさが出ている。静かな静かな作品。

この演奏集を初めて聴いた時は耳を疑った。「これがあのキースか」と。なぜなら私の知っているキース･ジャレットは、マイルス･デイヴィス･バンドでの超アグレッシヴなキーボードプレイや自身のバンドでの実験的精神を伴った創作活動、そして、前人未到のピアノソロ･インプロヴィゼイションの数々における、人知を超えるかのような創造エネルギーを常に保ち続けた驚異のピアニストだったからである。しかし、このアルバムでのプレイはまるで別人のように感じた。ひとことで言ってしまえば「枯れた音」であった。保守的な老人ジャズマンの枯れた感じとはもちろん異質だが、正直言って心配してしまうほどであった。慢性疲労症候群なる病気の療養中と聞いていたので、キースは本当に大丈夫なのか？と疑ってしまった。それほど今までの諸作でのエネルギーがそこには全く感じられなかったからである。その後、来日コンサートや新作を発表、さらにアーティストとしてまた一つ進化した姿を見せてくれ、再び新たなエネルギーを持って演奏を再開した彼を見て、やっと安心してこの作品が聴けるようになった。これは推測であるが、このアルバムでのプレイは病気の経験を通して彼の心にもたらされたそれまでにはなかった平安な部分を素直にピアノに託した結果なのではないかと思える。キース･ジャレットというピアニストの隠されたアナザーサイドを垣間見るような、ファンとしては貴重な作品の一つとなった。

畑違いの人間が書くレビューです。

普段はこんな種類の音楽を聞く人種ではないのですが、ジャケットの素晴らしさに引かれてこのCDを買いました。
１曲目の音が流れてきた時に、周囲の風景が急に静かになるのを感じました。
心にしみ込む、この音色はいつも聞いている音楽とは別の興奮を届けてくれ、いつまでもその音に体を委ねたい様な気持ちが沸き起こりました。

世の中にはまだまだ素晴らしい音があることを教えてくれた１枚です。
