『At the Close of a Century』だなんて、何やらものものしいタイトルのボックス・セットではある。とてつもないライターでありパフォーマーであるスティービー・ワンダーの仕事を振り返ったものにしても、だ。しかし、考えてみてほしい。ちょうどこのセットが登場するころに50歳の誕生日を迎えるワンダーは、すでにレコードをつくり続けて36年になるのである。となれば、現時点でのマイルストーンを世に送り出す際、大方のアーティストたちよりも少しばかりもったいぶったって彼なら許されるはずだ。
過去にもさまざまなレトロスペクティブものがあったが、『At the Close of a Century』はワンダーのキャリアを全体的に網羅した初めてのもの。1枚目のディスクを聴き終えるまでには、彼が初期にモータウンで発表したヒット曲の数々を耳にし、1970年代に入ってランドマーク的なアルバムを連発することになる彼の成長ぶりを目の当たりにすることになる。（ワンダーが書いたアレサ・フランクリンのヒット曲「Until You Come Back to Me」が、ここでは作曲者自身によるレア・バージョンで登場。）2枚目、3枚目のディスクには、『Talking Book』（1972）から『Hotter Than July』（1980）までのLPから選曲されており、珠玉のような名曲が続く。1973年のアルバム『Innervisions』に至っては、1曲を除いてすべてが収録されているほどだ。そして「Master Blaster」以降のヒット曲である「That Girl」や「Overjoyed」が最後のディスクのごちそうとなる。エッセイ、写真、ディスコグラフィを掲載したスマートなブックレットも付いているし、パッケージもかっこいいので、ハード・コアなスティービー・マニアも迷わずコレクションに加えたくなるだろう。（Rickey Wright, Amazon.co.uk）
