Maurizio Pollini brings cool elegance and unflappable sheen to Debussy's Preludes Book One. He contours the dynamics with micromanaged aplomb, and achieves ravishing pedal effects in the more meditative selections. One can't find fault with the pianist's well-oiled fingerwork and beautifully modulated sonority. Yet the music's evocative, dreamlike qualities elude Pollini's protean grasp, especially compared to Arrau's robust inflections, Paul Jacobs's aching poetry, and Zaidee Parkinson's haunting rumination. Pollini dispatches the neo-Lisztian hurdles of L'Isle Joyeuse with efficient ease, holding himself aloof from the orgiastic abandon characterizing more memorable readings from Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Vladimir Horowitz, and Walter Gieseking. 久しぶりに聴いた名演！
ゆったりとしたドビュッシーの夜の音楽に出会えたのは本当に久しぶりでした。
“西風の見たもの”では
思わずポリーニの唸りを上げる声まで聞こえてしまいますが、
他の曲ではドビュッシーのゆったりとした深さに出会うことができました。
（サントリーホールで第2巻を演奏していたので）続きを期待しています。

1998年6月ミュンヘンで録音。ポリーニはベートーベンのディアベッリ変奏曲を1998年9月4-9日同じミュンヘンで録音しておりその前の録音がこれということになるだろう。
ジャケットのポリーニは齢を重ね、昔の若々しい風貌はもはや想像することも難しい。サントリー・ホールに演奏を聴きに行った時もジャケット写真さながらで好々爺という感じになってしまっていた。学生時代に聴きに行ったアルフレッド・ブレンデルの背の高い偉丈夫な風貌はジャケットのイメージと大きく違っていて驚いた覚えがあるが、ポリーニの好々爺姿は哀しい意外さだった。年齢の重力だけは天才にも凡人にもひどく平等だ。
そしてピアノというのは多く力技を要する。僕に言わせれば男性専用の打楽器である。故に完璧な10指のコントロールを誇る、ヴィルトーゾ、マウリツィオ・ポリーニであっても若きエネルギーを持って表現し得る曲というものが間違いなく存在した。それがショパンのエチュードであり、シューベルトのさすらい人であったと思える。
かくて若きエネルギーを失ったヴィルトーゾはエネルギーでない輝きを放つ曲を探し始める。それがこのドビュッシーでありディアベッリ変奏曲なのだと僕は思う。ドビュッシー演奏というとすぐにワルター・ギーゼキングの演奏が思い浮かぶ。しかしながらこの演奏はギーゼキングの何万倍も深い輝きと精神性に満ちて聴こえる。それはポリーニが自ら演奏すべきものを妥協なく選び、到達したものだからなのだと思う。
この希代のヴィルトーゾ、マウリツィオ・ポリーニと同じ時代を生き、演奏を体験出来た幸せは何物にも勝るものだと思えてならない。
