なんとも個性的なフィオナ・アップル。ソフトコア・ビデオと音楽賞への強い非難、そして今回歴史上もっとも滑稽なタイトル(全部数えると90語もある)がついた2枚目のアルバムをリリースし、ますます変わり者の評判がたっているが、もしかしたら本当にそうなのかもしれない。嘘っぽく変り種のコンテンポラリーに反して、ボロを纏ったオオカミは普通の世界の迷い子のようだが、才能にかけては本物だといえる。目を見張るようなデビュー作『Tidal』をそのまま引き継いだような『When the Pawn Hits』。今回もジョン・ブリオンをプロデューサーに迎えている。勢いのあるキーボードを中心とした音の広がりは、、彼女の自己主張が強く危険なほどにセクシーで、ニーナ・サイモンとクリッシィー・ハインドを合わせたようなスタイルを完璧なまでに引き立てている。「On the Bound」の不吉なカーニバルっぽい間奏、「Mistake」のジョージ・ハリソン風ギター演奏に「Limp」のドラムソロ(最近のポップアルバムで、このどれかひとつでもでも聴いたことがあるだろうか)など、予想できない装飾音がアレンジに色を添えている。ブリオンによる強化はアップルに使われている。心もとない感傷(「気が変わったの。決められなくて。選択肢がありすぎるわ」)を超自然に自信を持って表現し、非難や自己批判を冷めた目で釈明するアップル。しっかりまとまって、図太く、また繊細に磨きがかけられたアルバムだ。1996年に最も期待された新人は、2年目のスランプなど微塵も感じさせない。個性は強いが、同時に素晴らしいアーティストだ。

前回の「TIDAL」は内気で聡明な少女の孤独な日記という趣きを持ったアルバムであった。
今回のアルバムは音が前回より聞きやすいのでFIONAを初めて聞く方にお薦めできる。
もちろん前作と同じFIONAの重みのあるハスキーヴォイスはは素晴らしいがこのアルバムで彼女は表現をするという余裕がでてきたように感じる。

はかなげな少女ではなく「強い大人の女性」へとしっかり変化している姿に初期の頃からのファンとしては感動的です。
彼女はおそらくとても自分に厳しい女性なのだろう。だから，しっかり成長する。
今回のアルバムもすべての曲が素晴らしいし，その詞もあいかわらず厳しく美しい仕上がりになっています。

ファーストでは自分の心の傷とか痛みをそれはとんでもないほどのリアリティを持って表現していたんですが、まあそれを売り物に出来る期間は少ないよな。良い言い方はすればぐっと洗練された、悪い言い方をすれば丸くなった。声は相変わらず表現力ありますが、曲はファーストほどの説得力ないです。アラニスモリセットの大ヒットで出てきた人なんでよくポストアラニスとかいわれたりしますが音楽性は全然違います。でも二人ともファーストがピークという意味では似てるかも。

いつだったか、何かのイベントで2、3人と一緒にステージで歌ってる彼女を、BSで観ました。

明るい曲調だったのに彼女の声が、何故か中島みゆきを連想させました。
でも良い声です。アレンジはドラムが特徴的。

彼女の音楽うんぬんはともかく、このCDの解説・邦題や邦訳やらが、ちょっと癇にさわる。
