Once essential and unassailable, Alice Cooper albums have been gradually reduced to the status of gig souvenirs; the sonic equivalent of tour programmes for their inglorious creator's increasingly burlesque stage shows. Yet
Brutal Planet finds Alice at least toying with the musical Zeitgeist by utilising contemporary metal devices and echoing
Marilyn Manson dynamics. His lyrics, meanwhile, can still raise occasional eyebrows. "Pick Up The Bones" is traditionally and exquisitely sick while "Take It Like A Woman" is heavily reminiscent of "Only Women Bleed". But with the album's title track and "Eat Some More" Alice has also belatedly unearthed an environmentally motivated social conscience. Somewhat disturbingly however, both "Wicked Young Man" and "Blow Me A Kiss" are savagely right wing in tone and such clumsy, easily-misinterpreted lyrics would undeniably cause a less established, or indeed, younger man to be publicly pilloried.
