シンセサイザーの無味乾燥で生気を欠いた退屈な音質を、チャーチル、ハイデガー、デリダ、ブルーノ・ガンツら過去から現在までの声のサンプリングや、最小限のビートの導入によって触発・活性化しつつ、淡々と静かに進んでいく、ゆるやかで果てしない装飾の殺ぎ落とされた音楽、その真白いＣＤには、１枚目４５分、２枚目５６分ほどの長さの持続・変化がおさめられているが、ひたすら安らかに、いくらでも聴けるし、また聴くにつれて心は浄化され、毎日見慣れて気にも留めない窓外の風景、ぼやけた住宅や道路の組み合わせが、何か偉大なものを失って途方に暮れている、いわば、廃墟の一種に見えてくるといった効果ももたらしてくれるのであった。

人類が生き残り、人類が支配する地球の表層的な「のどけさ」は、その足下に分厚い「灰の層」を敷きつめ、人類の「火」によって滅ぼされた、さまざまなものが息を詰めて眠っているのかもしれず、そうしたことをごくわずかな聴衆に想起させようとする徒労と鎮魂の音楽が、ここにはある。

この時代を超越しようとする現代音楽が、しばし流れ、それに耳傾け続けている限り、つまりたかだか２時間程のあいだは、ノスタルジックで喪失感に似た嘆きが、心の底から、あてもなく手繰りだされ、それにともない、非宗教化されつくした現世では稀にしか味わえないカタルシスが、そこに代わって座を占めるだろう。だから、この２時間はあまりにも短いように思われてしまいさえする。いや、じつは、その思い込みこそが、本譜を聴く者の随一の収穫なのだろうと信じたくなるのだった。

シンセサイザーによる音楽の可能性は、常に「ナマ音」の優位で片付けられてしまいがちで、本作ＣＤに関しても、例のオペラを見るほうが感動を得られる、といった安易な感想が多くの者の口から漏れはする。しかし、それではミニマル・ミュージックの存在意義は無いだろう。まさに「ナマ音」なり映像なりを付加することが解決になるというのは、典型的邪道であり、音楽の可能性からの逃避に過ぎない。そうしたことは明白すぎる論理なのだが、つい、我々「有機生命体」たる人間にとってあまりにも無機的なシンセサイザーの音が、苦痛に近い瞬間をもたらすのだった。

終始一貫してテンポの遅い音列を提示してみせる本譜は、本来実験的たろうとするならもっと遅くても良い、この５倍の長さでも良い、そうすれば憔悴にいたるほどの非人間的な時間を提供してくれたかもしれず、そこで我々が見出すのは無機物「灰」との対峙なのであり、シンセサイザーは灰の声なき声を象徴するのだと言える。

坂本龍一が手がけた話題のオペラ「LIFE」の青写真のような形でアイデアをまとめた音源集だ。現代音楽に分類されそうな、やや抽象的だが静かなピアノのメロディからオーケストラ、そして映画のサントラのように語りのサンプルを加えたもの、あるいはテクノまでと音楽的には多彩。沖縄音楽といったネイティブな音楽と生命の起源を重ねるなど、イメージの膨らみ、広がりが感じ取れる。

教授自身は、ブラームスとドビュッシーに影響を受けたと、（これはdiscordか？）語っていますが、僕は、neo geoの延長線上にあるプログレッシブの日本的なアプローチだと思います。教授の作品は、すべて疲れたときに聞くと心の落ち着く曲が多いのですが、これもその１枚です。BGMとして聞くのに非常によい疲れたときの１枚です。
