   50年代の前半、ジャズは1つの転換期を迎えていた。40年代半ばに起こったビバップをより洗練させたハードバップスタイルへの移行が、さまざまなミュージシャンたちによって試みられていたのである。アート・ブレイキーも多分にもれず、トランペッターのクリフォード・ブラウン、アルトサックス奏者のルー・ドナルドソンを迎えたバンドを率い、ジャズ・クラブ「バードランド」でジャム・セッションを行った。
   本作はそのときの模様を記録したライブ盤で、まさにハードバップが誕生する瞬間の熱気をとらえた重要な作品である。特にクリフォード・ブラウンの演奏が圧巻で、弾けるようなトランペットが鮮烈だ。ルー・ドナルドソンも、ブラウンに触発されたかのような勢いのある演奏を行っている。（後藤雅洋）

このアルバムでぼくは、ハードバップの熱気に触れました。イントロダクションが終わり、元気よく飛び出すツーホーンテーマが多少合わなくても関係ない。さぁ、行くぞ！という気合が感じられてしまう。そして、2曲目クリフォード･ブラウンさんのワンホーン。言葉を失う。シミジミとしたテーマ吹奏から、火の出るようなアドリブ。そして、途中からのホラス･シルバーさんのピアノの「ン､チャチャ!ン､チャチャ!」というバッキング「ぬぉー！」と唸るしかないです。アルトのルー･ドナルドソンさんは、4曲目のアドリブ第一声で僕を昇天てさせてくれました。
とにもかくにも、熱い熱すぎます火傷しそうです。

バードランドの名司会ピー・ウィー・マーケットの紹介に始まる冒頭の印象…クラブの雰囲気を見事に匂わせていてさすがだな、と思う。私はこの１曲目「スプリット・キック」のテーマから、そのままルーのアドリブになだれ込んでいく部分が好きだ。ステージ奥から凄まじいテンションで煽り立てるブレイキーに後押しされ、ルーもブラウニーも今にも燃え出しそうなアドリブを展開している。３曲目「クイックシルバー」５曲目「メイリー」も、冒頭曲と同様のハイ・テンションな名演であり、個人的に愛聴しているトラックである。

ジャズの熱気に満ち満ちた本作は、歴史的に重要な記録なだけでなく、素晴らしい音楽である。是非聞いてみてください。

司会者のあとにブワーっと音がスピーカーから飛び出る感じがすごい。当時からすると、まさにパワー一杯だったんだろうなと。
最近、ルディバンゲルダーのインタビューがスィングジャーナル（たぶん2006．08＆09号）に掲載されていて、それを読みながら、これを聞くと2倍楽しい。この音の分厚さが、どうやって録音されたかがよくわかる。
