A world without Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in it is a painful concept. Fortunately he bequeathed his music. Long before he was feted internationally, he was a hero in Pakistani and Northern India where his Sufi-inspired music overcame the worldly factionalism of Muslim, Sikh and Hindu. In later years, his concerts were attended by half-wits who, to his discomfort, felt it permissible to "do the bhangra" in some self-deluding parody of Sufi Dervish dancing--presumably because Khan was of Punjabi stock. In 1985 he recorded this album in Paris. (It eventually swelled to five volumes, every one a jewel of mystical devotion and musicality.) This is the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to remember, the singer who sang with such passion that he could move audiences to tears of joy or sadness even without their understanding the tiered intricacies of Persian or Arabic. The solo and chorus vocals rise and fall like tides, driven on by handclaps and percussion, carrying these devotional offerings only God knows where. Qawwali (Islamic devotional music) is a mystical communication with Allah and His Prophets. In the presence of such music, only a fool or somebody who had lost the plot would dare say otherwise. --Ken Hunt
