女1人、男3人の4人組のグループで、1967年にシカゴで結成され、1971年から1980年にかけて、多重録音したコーラスで人気を博しました。その間の15枚のアルバムから代表的なナンバーのベスト盤がこのCDです。1994年に発売され、2003年に再発売されたのですが、UKからの輸入盤ゆえ、入手が難しくなっているのは惜しいです。

コーラスの上に別の声部を重ねて録音することにより、とても複雑なハーモニーが生まれます。ステージ上では再現できない多声部がおりなす和音の変化がとても新鮮で、自由なハーモニーの構築こそ、その醍醐味でしょう。

「セサミ・ストリート」で聴くことができるジャズのフィーリングはレベルが高いですし、夢のような美しいハーモニーを聴くことが出来ます。
「フール・オン・ザ・ヒル」の多重コーラスならでは複雑なハーモニーはア・カペラの醍醐味です。万華鏡のような変化する輝きをもった響きは今聴いても新鮮でした。
多くのジャズ・メンに愛された「マイ・ロマンス」の絶妙のハーモニーの美しさは筆舌に尽くしがたいです。
ギルバート・オサリバンのヒット曲「クレア」のリズムパートの切れ味と分厚い和声。多重コーラスならではの複雑なハーモニー、ジーン・ピュアリングのアレンジが光ります。

20ページのリーフレットには、英語とドイツ語の解説と歌詞が収められています。中に収録されている3枚のモノクロの写真を眺めながら、時代を超えてア・カペラの素晴らしさを残してくれたメンバーに感謝しています。
ただベスト盤ゆえ、他のアルバムを入手している人にとっては当然収録曲がダブりますので、そのあたりは判断の分かれるところだと思います。
