Sugar and spice and all things nice, that's what Laika would appear to be made of on first inspection--beautiful, swirling melodies underpinning the sweet tones of singer Margaret Fiedler. The sound encompasses so many genres it's impossible to pigeonhole, but there are elements of trip-hop, ambient, jazz, indie and even classical to be found by the intrepid listener. It all seems highly inoffensive and, well, for want of a better word, nice. However, if you scratch the surface, there's a pit of malevolence and darkness lurking below the sugary coating, best demonstrated by the opening track "Black Cat Bone", which sees Margaret turning nasty, gleefully chanting voodoo-soaked lyrics over twisted saxophones and a rolling bass clarinet.
