スーパーグループＵＫのファーストアルバム。プログレ衰退期の１９７８年にブリティッシュ魂を見せてくれました。
ブラフォードとホールスワースのジャズロックとウェットンとジョブソンのプログレ魂がみごとに融合しています。このメンバーで２作目も聞きたかった。

１曲目からブラフォードの変拍子が炸裂。静と動が織り成す見事な曲構成で、あっという間に１枚聞き終わります。今聞いても色褪せないサウンドです。プログレファン必聴の一枚。

当時の元キング・クリムゾンのメンバーを中心に結成されたバンド。プログレ全盛期が黄昏にさしかかる頃の誕生だった。当時の日本でのアルバムタイトルは「憂国の四士」だった。志士ではなく、４人だから四士だ。アルバムはこれ１枚のみだ。続編も欲しかった。

私は、昭和５３年の大阪厚生年金会館ホールで行われたコンサートに、喜々として出かけた。迫力満点のコンサートでは、このアルバムに集録されている曲のすべてが演奏された。何しろ、レパートリーはこのアルバムだけなのだから。その時、ジョンのベースとビルのドラムだけの未発表曲が演奏されたが、この曲の即興的な素晴らしさが今でも脳裏に残る。

緻密に練り上げられたこのアルバムは、プログレファンなら誰でも好きになるだろう。発表のタイミングのために、知名度が少し低いが、歴史的名盤だと思う。なお、輸入盤ＣＤは、ＵＳＡからのものとＵＫからものがある。仕様はＡＡＤだ。

これは、プログレファンの宝だ。

第3期クリムゾン解散後にウェットン、ブラッフォード、ジョブスンとホールズワースの4人で結成されたプログレバンドの1stアルバム。
時代は1978年。パンクロックを始めとするニューウェーブが主流でプレグレは斜陽期だった時代。最後の悪あがきだったのだろうか。
もともとトリオ編成だったところに、ホールズワースが合流したらしく、「頼まれたので適当にギターを弾いたらそのままOKになった。」と、後年ホールズワースがインタビューで語っていた。
結局、この1枚でブラッフォードとホールズワースが抜け、ブラッフォードの替わりにテリー･ボジオが加入し、2ndアルバム「Danger Money」では結局当初の予定通りトリオ編成になった。
なぜか日本では人気があったようで、1979年に日本で収録したライブアルバム「Night After Night」を発表して解散。
往年のプログレサウンドを彷彿とさせながら、インタープレイ等は控えめに、時代に合せて比較的コンパクトに纏まっているが、ニューウェーブ全盛の時代には、時代性といった点でインパクトが低かったのかもしれない。
この後、ウェットンがエイジアの結成に走るのだが、今にして思えば、UKでのアプローチがその下敷きになっていた事がわかる。
