1978年6月オスロ、タレント・スタジオで録音。間違いなくデイジョネットの作品の中で最も重要な一枚。
相変わらずマンフレート・アイヒャーの組み合わせる面子の妙に感心してしまう。アバクロの浮遊感溢れるギターに、かき混ぜ続けるようなゴメスのベース(これが特に好き)、呼吸し続けているようなボウイのペット、どれもが全て有機的だ。4人が組むとこうなるか、という感じだ。

僕は特にディジョネットのピアノが聴ける『Silver Hollow』と最も有機的なサウンドの『Bayou Fever』が好きだ。

New Directionsは、ディジョネット名義のプロジェクトで、メンツは他にジャケのポートレートのごとくアバークロンビー(ｇ)、レスター・ボウイ(tr)、エディ・ゴメス(ｂ）。
アバークロンビーの名作Arcadeをさかのぼる半年前の78年6月の録音作品である。
アルバム全体の気配を支配しているのは、アバークロンビーの浮遊感あふれるギター・プレイである。当然ボウイのソロ・プレイはそこかしこで味わい深く展開されるが、常にドローンのように響きほの暗く渦巻いてるのはアバークロンビーのプレイである。よって彼の作風を色濃く反映した重要作と言って過言ではないだろう。
なおかつ全曲ディジョネットの作曲（うち２曲はメンバー全員による共作）ということもありアバークロンビーのリーダー作とは微妙に異なる曲風及びアプローチの違いを楽しむことができる。
アルバム終曲はドラムレスで、ディジョネットの繊細・流麗なピアノからはじまる。ディジョネットの才能及び面目躍如たる香気漂う美麗な曲である。彼のピアノにボウイのミュートしたtrがかぶさり、さらにアバークロンビーのソロが展開されるくだりは息を飲む美しさである。
本アルバムは、とりわけアバークロンビー・ファンには絶対はずせない重要作であると思う。

ジャック・デジョネットがＥＣＭに残した「ニュー・ダイレクション」ユニットによる1978年の作品。参加メンバーはジョン・アバークロンビー（ギター、マンドリン）、レスター・ボウイ（トランペット）、エディー・ゴメス（ベース）という強力な布陣です。

ここでの最大の聴きどころは、何と言ってもアバークロンビーの浮遊感あふれるプレイです。アバークロンビー自身も、リッチー・バイラーク（ピアノ）と組んで「アーケード」「Ｍ」「アバークロンビー・カルテット」という耽美系3部作に取り組んでいた時期で、リズム隊が作りだすまったり感あふれる構成の中で、ギターとマンドリンを巧みに使い分けながら、自由自在に空中を浮遊しながら聴く者を桃源郷の世界へと誘います。最後の5「Silver Hollow」は、アバークロンビーもほかのアルバムで好んで取り上げる曲ですが、デジョネットのピアノとがあいまって作りなすあまりにも美しいハーモニーは、地味ながらも名曲の予感です。

ただ、全体としてはやや緊張感に欠け、冗漫に思える部分もないわけではありません。同じメンバーで臨んだライブアルバムは、その悪い部分が出てしまっていて、こちらはあまりお勧めできません。
